Important reminder for those visiting Costa Rica and its beaches 🇨🇷🌊 🙏🏼

Costa Rica is known worldwide for its nature and the care we give to protect it. Keeping it this way is everyone’s responsibility 💚

Please, do not take seashells from the beach.

I’ve seen many families do this without knowing that in Costa Rica it is illegal, but beyond the law, there is an important reason:

Seashells play a vital role in the marine ecosystem.
Hermit crabs depend on them to live, grow, and protect themselves. As they grow, they need to find new shells to survive. Seashells also contribute to the natural balance of the ocean, helping maintain its pH.

Taking shells may seem like a small thing, but it has a real impact on nature.

If you are visiting with children, take a moment to explain this to them. It’s a beautiful opportunity to teach respect and care for the environment 💛

It’s sad to see so many being taken… but I’ve also had the chance to kindly speak with people who didn’t know, and they returned them. Awareness makes a difference.

If you see someone doing the same out of lack of knowledge, please kindly inform them. Together we can protect our beaches.. PLEASE, PLEASE 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Also, keep in mind that shells are often confiscated at the airport.

And just as important: always take your trash with you. Do not leave it on the beach or in any natural area. Use trash bins or carry it with you until you find one.

Let’s protect what makes Costa Rica so special 🌴✨

“We hope you enjoy, have an amazing experience, and fall in love with Costa Rica 🇨🇷✨”

Thank you

Pura vida 🇨🇷

The story of Costa Rica’s money is as colorful and beautiful as the country itself. Every coin and bill carries history, culture, and a deep sense of national pride.

🦋 The Art and Nature on the Bills

Costa Rica’s money is famous for its breathtaking design. Modern colón banknotes celebrate:

Wildlife like sloths, monkeys, sharks, butterflies, and hummingbirds

Rainforests, coral reefs, and mountain ecosystems

Important historical figures and scientists

For example:

The 1,000 colones note features a hummingbird.

The 5,000 colones note highlights a blue morpho butterfly.

The 10,000 colones note features a sloth.

These designs reflect Costa Rica’s global reputation for biodiversity and conservation. The bills are colorful, vibrant, and almost feel like miniature pieces of art celebrating Pura Vida.

A Reflection of

Costa Rica’s money tells a story. It honors explorers, celebrates democracy, showcases wildlife, and reflects economic growth rooted in coffee, bananas, tourism, and sustainability.

Hold a colón in your hand, and you’re not just holding currency — you’re holding a small, beautiful symbol of a peaceful nation that chose education over an army, nature over excess, and community over conflict.

That’s the true beauty behind Costa Rica’s money.

In the jungles of Costa Rica, so-called "monkey bridges" are helping to save lives.

These structures, made of strong ropes, connect treetops over roads and deforested areas.

Thanks to them, species like howler and spider monkeys can move safely between feeding and resting areas.

Even other animals like sloths and birds have learned to use them.

This initiative, driven by local communities and conservationists, has drastically reduced wildlife roadkill.

A great example of how a simple solution can have a huge impact on conservation. Did you see them cross?

Costa Rica is divided into seven provinces, which are further subdivided into 84 cantons—each with its own unique history, culture, and personality. Let's explore a positive and colorful glimpse into the historical tapestry of some of these cantons, province by province. 🇨🇷✨

San José Province
San José Canton: The heart of the country! Founded in 1738, it became the capital after independence. A center of politics, culture, and commerce, it houses the iconic Teatro Nacional and Barrio Amón, once home to coffee barons.

Escazú: Known historically for its indigenous roots and later as a wealthy coffee-growing community, Escazú today is an expat haven with a modern flair and mysterious legends of witches and folklore.

Desamparados: One of the oldest cantons, originally a farming area. It grew quickly with urban sprawl and maintains strong community traditions.

Alajuela Province
Alajuela Canton: Home to national hero Juan Santamaría, this canton played a major role in the defense of Costa Rica during the 1856 invasion. The city bursts with history and mango trees!

San Ramón: Known as the “City of Presidents” due to its many political leaders, it was founded by settlers who valued education and civic involvement.

Grecia: Famous for its red metal church imported from Belgium in the late 1800s, Grecia blends religious tradition, farming, and a strong community spirit.

Cartago Province
Cartago Canton: The original capital until 1823, Cartago was founded by the Spanish in 1563. It's rich in colonial architecture and home to the Basílica de los Ángeles, a major pilgrimage site.

Turrialba: Historically connected to the railroad and coffee exports. Turrialba also boasts ancient roots with Guayabo National Monument, Costa Rica’s most important pre-Columbian site.

Heredia Province
Heredia Canton: Nicknamed the “City of Flowers,” it was a colonial agricultural town that blossomed into a university hub. The Spanish-built churches and cobblestone streets tell stories of old.

Sarapiquí: Historically a trade route during colonial times due to the Sarapiquí River. Today it's known for eco-tourism and its biodiversity-rich rainforests.

Guanacaste Province
Liberia: Known as the “White City” for its light-colored volcanic dust and colonial buildings. It became part of Costa Rica in 1824 through the Annexation of Nicoya, a proud moment celebrated annually.

Santa Cruz: The folklore capital! Known for its traditional dances, bull riding, and strong Chorotega indigenous influence.

Nicoya: One of the oldest settlements in Central America, originally a Chorotega village and now part of the Blue Zone where people live long, happy lives.

Puntarenas Province
Puntarenas Canton: Once a major port for coffee exports, this coastal canton became a lively town full of “Churchill” vendors, palm trees, and parque central strolls.

Quepos: Historically a banana town built by the United Fruit Company, now a gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park and a favorite for expats and nature lovers.

Golfito: Founded in the 1930s as a company town for banana production. It later reinvented itself with a duty-free zone and is now surrounded by lush jungles.

Limón Province
Limón Canton: A cultural jewel, Limón has Afro-Caribbean roots thanks to Jamaican laborers who came for the railroad and banana plantations. Calypso, rice and beans, and vibrant festivals tell its story.

Talamanca: Home to Bribrí and Cabécar indigenous groups, whose traditions continue. The canton also protects vast rainforests and is part of the La Amistad International Park.

🌟 In Conclusion
Each of Costa Rica’s cantons is a world of its own—rich in tradition, shaped by history, and inspired by nature. From the colonial streets of Cartago to the reggae rhythms of Limón and the cowboy culture of Guanacaste, the cantons are the beating heart of the Pura Vida lifestyle.

The howler monkeys of Costa Rica—nature’s alarm clocks with a flair for the dramatic!

These little furry divas don’t just wake up early, they make sure you do too. At around 5 a.m., while the rest of the jungle is still rubbing its eyes and deciding whether it’s a yoga or snooze button kind of morning, the howlers are already hosting a full-blown jungle rock concert. And they didn’t even ask for your RSVP.

Their signature sound? Imagine a lion gargling marbles in a cave… through a megaphone. That's basically the vibe. These howls can travel up to three miles through dense rainforest. Not because they’re trying to find each other or defend territory—no, no—they’re just really passionate about being loud.

You’ll be sipping your first magical cup of Costa Rican coffee, taking in the serene morning mist, thinking life couldn’t get more peaceful, when suddenly:

“WRAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

…Good morning to you, too, Fernando the Howler.

And these monkeys? They look like grumpy old men who’ve just been told the buffet ran out of gallo pinto. Always hanging out in groups, sitting on branches like they’re judging everyone below. You get the feeling they’d yell “Get off my lawn!” if they had one.

Despite their dramatic flair, howler monkeys are mostly chill. They spend about 70% of their day just lounging, occasionally munching on leaves, and probably plotting their next surprise morning performance. Honestly, if there were jungle Oscars, they’d sweep the Best Supporting Yeller category every year.

In short: They’re loud, they’re lazy, and they’ve got big main-character energy. But hey, that’s just another quirky blessing of Costa Rica, right? Pura Vida—with a side of HOWL!

🇨🇷 Today, Costa Rica is positioned on the global radar for luxury tourism with a purpose.

We opened the doors of the Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica – Punta Cacique. An icon of luxury with a purpose, developed by Garnier & Garnier, which projects Costa Rica as a high-end global destination.

🌱 Marine restoration and ecosystem protection.
📍 Architectural design that honors the Guanacaste landscape.

This partnership with Hilton as the operator under the Waldorf Astoria brand is a testament to what Costa Rica is capable of building with vision, excellence, and sustainability.
