👩🏽❤️👩🏽The Mediterranean Exchanges Good Practices in Limassol
🙌With the participation of representatives from local authorities, civil society organisations, universities, migrant communities and international partners from four Mediterranean countries, the first day of the 1st Community Engagement Symposium of the TRANSFORMED project took place on Friday in Limassol, hosted by the Cultural Movement of Limassol “EPILOGI.”
🤲🏽The opening day of the Symposium brought together representatives of municipalities, organisations, academic institutions and communities from Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Lebanon, creating a platform for the exchange of experiences and good practices on cooperation between local authorities and civil society. Through presentations, discussions and interventions from diverse social and cultural contexts across the Mediterranean, participants explored ways in which cities can respond more effectively to the needs of their residents and encourage greater civic participation in public life.
👐🏼The TRANSFORMED project, coordinated by the Anna Lindh Foundation and co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, aims to strengthen connections and cooperation between local authorities and civil society. Through the project, tools, initiatives and participatory processes are being developed to help municipalities, organisations and communities work together more effectively in designing actions and policies that respond to the real needs of people.
🫶The Symposium was officially opened by Tatiana Tsietti, President of the Cultural Movement of Limassol “EPILOGI”, Yiannis Armeftis, Mayor of Limassol, Kyriacos Xydias, Mayor of Amathounta, and Pantelis Georgiou, Mayor of Kourion.
🫱🏻🫲🏾In his address, Mayor of Limassol Yiannis Armeftis highlighted the multicultural character of the city and the importance of ensuring the active participation of all communities in public life. He made special reference to the reinvolvement of the Municipality to the Intercultural Council, which resumed its activities through the cooperation between the Municipality and the Cultural Movement “EPILOGI,” bringing back into focus to the local authorities, the dozens of communities that add colour, voice and vitality to contemporary Limassol.
🧕🏻Through its renewed operation, new channels of communication have been reopened between the Municipality and the city’s vibrant multicultural mosaic, creating opportunities for people who share the same city but often move in parallel worlds to meet, interact and collaborate. At the same time, space has been given to voices, experiences and stories that rarely find themselves at the centre of public discussion, transforming Limassol’s diversity from a simple demographic characteristic into a driving force for dialogue, cooperation and collective action. In this way, the city is weaving together the threads of communication between its communities once again, building relationships of trust and creating a more dynamic network of interaction among the people who shape its identity every day.
🧕🏾Mayor of Amathounta Kyriacos Xydias stressed that social inclusion and citizen participation are not abstract concepts but a daily responsibility of local authorities. As he noted, municipalities are closer than anyone else to the concerns, challenges and aspirations of residents and therefore play a crucial role in creating opportunities for participation, dialogue and equal access for all. He also emphasised the importance of cooperation between local government, civil society organisations and active citizens as a prerequisite for stronger and more resilient communities.
👳🏾♂️Mayor of Kourion Pantelis Georgiou focused on the value of involving citizens directly in decisions that affect their everyday lives. He underlined that social cohesion is not built solely through policies and structures, but through relationships of trust, cooperation and shared responsibility. He also highlighted the importance of exchanging experiences and good practices among municipalities and organisations from different countries, stressing that collaboration and mutual learning are valuable tools in addressing common social challenges.
👳🏻♂️The Municipality of Limassol’s Office of Social Affairs and Programmes also participated actively in the Symposium, presenting initiatives and actions implemented at local level that contribute to strengthening social cohesion and civic participation. Good practices, programmes and strategies in the fields of inclusion, integration and diversity were also presented by the social services departments of the Municipalities of Amathounta and Kourion, as well as by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), showcasing local initiatives aimed at building more open, accessible and inclusive communities.
👨🦳During the day, the TRANSFORMED project and its core objectives were presented, while project partners and associates showcased the initiatives and programmes they implement within their organisations. The network includes the Cultural Movement of Limassol “EPILOGI,” the Anna Lindh Foundation, the Youth Center of Epirus, civil society organisations, academic institutions and local authorities from Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Lebanon, all working together to develop new approaches that strengthen the relationship between citizens and institutions.
👩🏿🦰Particular interest was generated by presentations from municipal authorities in Italy and Lebanon, who shared concrete examples of how municipalities collaborate with organisations, community groups and local residents. Through real-life case studies, participants explored methods for mapping social needs, co-designing initiatives, evaluating services and building sustainable partnerships between local authorities and citizens.
🧑🏿❤️🧑🏽At the same time, civil society organisations and representatives of migrant communities shared their experiences from everyday practice, offering insights and recommendations on the challenges communities face and on how cooperation with institutions can be strengthened.
👩🏽❤️👩🏽The Symposium continues on Saturday with thematic workshops and group discussions focusing on women’s empowerment, active citizenship and the protection of civic space, youth employability and economic inclusion, as well as migrant inclusion and social cohesion. Through this participatory process, participants will identify challenges, needs and recommendations that will contribute to the next phases of the project and to the development of tools that will be utilised by partners in their respective countries.
🙌The first day of the Symposium confirmed that, despite the different realities faced by local communities across the Mediterranean, many of the challenges remain common. Through the exchange of experiences, the transfer of knowledge and open dialogue among municipalities, organisations and communities, TRANSFORMED seeks to build stronger bridges of cooperation across the region, bringing closer together those who design policies and those who experience their impact in everyday life.
🫱🏻🫲🏾The message is ONE. From inclusion to participation, and from participation to leadership: this is how municipalities, universities, governments, and migrant communities become role models of a society that does not merely make room for everyone, but progresses because of everyone. When the doors of institutions open, so do people’s opportunities. Diversity then ceases to be a challenge and becomes a strength. A city for all is not a slogan. It is a commitment to invest in every person, ensuring that no one is left behind and that everyone can become part of the solution.
