Whether you prefer Draft or Draught - both spellings are recognised across international maritime jurisdictions and classification societies.

At its core, a Draught Survey is an internationally accepted method for determining the displacement (weight) of bulk cargo loaded or discharged from a vessel in the absence of physical weighbridge scales. It is the standard method used for commodities such as iron ore, coal, grain, and cement.

Calculating true cargo tonnage is far more complex than simply subtracting arrival displacement from departure displacement. Arriving at an accurate, commercially binding figure requires the synthesis of the following considerations:

• Ship’s hydrostatic analysis
• Correcting for hogging, sagging, and torsional (twisting) effects along the hull girder.
• Averaging waterline readings against wave action, swell, and water density.
• Sounding non-cargo tanks and accounting for ballast, fuel, and fresh-water fluctuations.
• Executing calculations under strict time constraints before sailing.

Accurate hydrostatic survey work protects shipowners, charterers, and cargo interests alike; it ensures true accountability for the Bill of Lading.

Pipe laying vessels represent one of the most specialised, capital-intensive segments in global offshore shipping. Their construction is engineered around heavy subsea infrastructure installation, complex dynamic positioning, and extreme tension-load operations.

FROM OFFSHORE, TO DEEPWATER

Purpose-built for demanding offshore energy campaigns, the global fleet remains highly exclusive, with roughly 180 active vessels worldwide, of which only 40 belong to the ultra-deepwater / heavy-lift class capable of operating in depths exceeding 1500 meters.

Key survey considerations for these complex assets include:
• Station-Keeping & Power: Reliance on Dynamic Positioning systems, thruster redundancy, and massive diesel-electric power plants.
• Structural Tension Loads: Managing continuous suspended pipe loads via high-capacity tensioners and stingers.
• Fire & Industrial Safety: Hot-work, welding, and high-voltage electrical hazards inside onboard production lines.
• Complex Intact Stability: Rapid, heavy-weight shifts, dynamic pipe tension, and counter-ballasting operations.
• High POB Management: Housing large multidisciplinary complements, as high as 1000 staff and crew of engineers, technicians, doctors and office staff, including crew comparable in scale to a passenger vessel.

Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) vessels represent a highly specialised segment of global merchant shipping - engineered specifically for wheeled cargo that rolls directly on and off the ship without the need for traditional lifting gear.

EASY LOAD yet RISKY CARGO While making up roughly 3% of the world fleet by vessel count (4,5% by Gross Tonnage or cargo volume and 1.75% by Deadweight Tonnage or cargo weight), Ro-Ro operations carry vulnerabilities associated with,
-Evolving fire risks associated with Electric Vehicles and thermal runaway.
-Securing of wheeled cargo by use of lashings to prevent heavy seas-induced shifting.
-Susceptibility to free surface effects on vehicle decks in the absence of longitudinal bulkheads.
-Ramp/door envelope seal integrity to avert seawater ingress.
