Petunias which I bought in Feb for $0.50 a piece cause they were tiny needed a re-pot so some found their final destination. Will stay in the greenhouse until mid May. Lobelias are planted from seed, doing great.

Couple days behind …. 🍅 13 tomatoes were planted in the hoop house on 4/20 after an extensive prep by my favorite gardener. We have not been happy with the harvest there for a few years. Soil was dry and hard and seemingly lifeless. I got it tested and the results came back as very high in all nutrients. The only recommendation was to add compost for organic matter.
So here he goes, digging and incorporating compost before I planted tomatoes last minute before my departure. Night temps still didn’t feel comfortable to me but they needed to go in or planted at a bigger pot which I did with 6 of them. Their root system was perfect. Today’s update was that they all are doing great despite 0.5C/33F at night and 50C/122F during the day yesterday! The hoop stayed closed all day yesterday as he was driving me to the airport. It’s a gamble.

I am leaving in a few days for couple of weeks, so of course everything has to happen NOW. Started:Zucchini Cucumbers 🥒 ...

I think I forgot the radishes... Every year I tell myself that they are not worth it, and every year I plant them because I have seeds or I think - well, it is a small effort, just throw them in. So I sowed them on Feb-3, variety Viola and BIO Sora, and I harvested some Violas abt. a week ago when I was clearing for tomatoes. Nice enough but we obviously have a lot of nitrogen and not enough phosphorus 😄. So I again say not worth it.

Note to myself: do not plant the greens, especially lettuce that doesn’t bolt easily (like my Grenoble variety), in the area where tomatoes go in spring. Had to clear 6 perfect plants, after clearing kale and arugula yesterday. Kale and arugula were bolting though, or close to, so that’s okay. Swiss chard harvest are just large leaves, I didn’t clear the plants. Lotsa greens at our household these days!! 🌱 And our neighbors in town and at the garden benefit too! 😊

Tomato planting days in the greenhouse! 🍅 Total of 16 cherries and 1 regular to try. Greenhouse typically doesn’t get too sunny (we have a big oak shading it) or too hot, so regular tomatoes don’t do as well there. 12 in the south bed, 2 each in the east and west beds, and Amish Paste (regular) in the west bed too.
Dug a deep hole, filled with two hands full of our wonderful compost, watered it in, planted the seedlings deep after removing bottom 2-3 leaves. Made a bowl around them so water stays in. Watered well. Tak.
Btw, large seedlings like this are $8 a piece at Bauhaus. I’ve got around 40 of them 😊.

Keep raising the ceiling on those tomatoes !! 🍅 I know, you might be a redneck…. Planting them in greenhouse and hoop ho...
