It happened that here (in Chateau Otin instagram) I post not just the restoration news but it also has become the place where I share some of my thoughts, feelings, sometimes fears - which this month have been at such high amplitude as it was hard to shape them into a suitable writing form. Anyway it is time to come back… at least with some general update:
- There are a lot more of us here at the chateau right now. We have been hosting a family of my former colleague from Ukraine since the benign of March.
- The renovation of chateau interiors is stopped for an uncertain period. My beloved and so far only profitable business (cultural tailor-made tourism to Czechia and Hungary from Russia and Ukraine) is no longer operating.
- We have though successfully received a grand from The Ministry of Culture for 2022 for some parts of the roof 👌🏻. So will be continuing working on the roof in April or May I suppose.
- I am going for a conference to Dublin next week. It will be focus on the topics of diversification of historic properties and their innovative uses for heritage and also family business at such premises. Hopefully that trip would unwind me a bit and give if not an incredible idea of what to do next but at least an inspiration to continue. ☝🏻I promise to show you some stories (maybe many) from the conference.

I just must write something tonight )) … my first night here.. at the chateau with all my things with me 🧳 🧳🧳🧳🧳. Officially moved in… 📍🏰

I wish I can say everything is perfectly done and looks the way I was imagining it would look by now.. but no … Looks like it is still a looooooong way till I can say I feel comfortable enough here. But I feel good. Not yet very happy , but very good ))

There have been no posts from me or even stories since Christmas.. To tell the truth - I was so upset of not achieving what I thought I would and I didn’t want to show the results which I myself felt were not good enough to you, to anybody. Silly of me, I know. I think the best way to describe the part of the restoration journey which is I behind me now is to say : when I started it I felt like a 10 year old kid - full of enthusiasm and energy, very very excited. By the end of those eight months I felt like a 100 year old lady … very very disappointed, plus tired and irritated and, of course, too old for the social media 😂. Well.. the circle is over 🤞🏻, the lessons - learnt and I am back to my real and wonderful mid-thirties ✌🏻The best age to continue.. The next steps will be taken more wisely, more slowly and to maximize the joy from the process. Love you all and most likely will continue doing stories ..

Merry Christmas everyone! My first one at the chateau … I can’t believe! Of course when I was imagining my dream Christmas back in July - I thought of a grand Christmas tree, freshly done rooms, lots of cooking at the new kitchen.. festivity dressed table … I even bought a gramophone and brought from Russia my father’s collection of records from the 70s… well.. all that and more next year…. ☝🏻 Or, perhaps, at the New Year 🤫 (as we are still in December run)) Today the tiling of the living room has been finished, we are going to bring the fireplace back to the room later tonight, light the candles (no working sockets yet), put some nice Christmas movie on and will eat grilled chicken wings… and that I would call a very-happy-real-Christmas! ❤️

Just thought I’d tell you a story about my experience as a volunteer 🙋🏻‍♀️ and with volunteers 🤝⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Once, after spending three weeks in the hospital, I decided I want to dedicate some of my free time to help people who are sick. I found an organisation, applied for two days training course about the psychological aspects of working in the hospital - what you can/ can not tell to the people you are going to visit there. The job was simple: you come to the hospital in the certain hours and entertain the patients - so they don’t feel too lonely. Well.. I myself felt super lonely at the hospital, though my boyfriend at that time was visiting me every day but it didn’t help. I felt miserable, helpless and was working hard on my last will. Yet his regular visits and velvety calming voice did their job , I said “yes” 💍 . I don’t want to go into my personal life too much, but just so you know we got divorced. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As for my volunteering work at the hospital - it was a shorter story: I said “yes” , but I took it back . I simply couldn’t enter the hospital at the first day of work… I stood in front of the doors, almost crying and giving an impression to everybody around that somebody has just died. One lady asked me: “Are you all right?” I said: “yes, yes, I am a volunteer, I came here to help people to feel better while they are going through hard times!” She said - “Go home - have some pity on people..” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I was thinking a lot about both of those fiascos. Certainly more about the first one.. No need to share all my thoughts on that, but one thing they had in common: I tried … and had the best intentions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Later on when I bought Chateau Otin (almost three years ago) many people were saying to me you should invite volunteers - there are people who might like to help. Even the thought of doing that made me feel very uncomfortable. I straight away saw my ex-husband saying to me: « [continues in the comments ⬇️]

This picture doesn’t illustrate the weather today. It rains all day non-stop. My day though does: waken up... cleaning... grocery shopping... back to bed (put the heating on. mistakenly 🥵. = four hours siesta)... waken up... couple of emails... dinner... realised that there is no place to eat here now (restoration), apart from outside or my bedroom.... started outside.. too wet... back to the bedroom... too cold.. thinking to put the heating on again... but would like to finish the post first (😴😴😴😴😴). Honestly, I love it here. And the picture illustrates that! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Stunning from outside; challenging inside... My little 18th century chateau , before that a 14th century fortress... what a long life... Surely with many fascinating and bright chapters, but also with many hard ones. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Drinking coffee on a terrace now... it rains ... and my thoughts are little watery too.. Just spoken with Michal (you will learn why that’s connected later). Anyway I have to say the amplitude of moods is high here. Up and down. Up and down. And it is not just events... it is everything and everybody. As soon as somebody entrees the gates of the chateau - the building pushes him to choose the side straight away🙂☹️ Honestly, that’s happens even the professionals, the expects who suppose to be neural with emotions.. That used to freak me out so much, but now I learnt it’s not the knowledge speaking but something else... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like I have two builders here , well.. there are more of them of course but two are here with me every day. So two builders: one (Roman) is a-glass-half- full; the other one (Mikhail) is always a-glass-half- empty 🙈 When Roman and me open a can of paint and it is suddenly grey instead of white. Before I say anything, he comments : “I am sure, Daria, when it’s dry it will be snowy white”. The crack on a facade - “I am sure it’s just because we took the old floor out and the building has started to breathy fully finally and when you breath Daria your body moves, right? The same here. It ’s a good sign!”. And Michal ... Michal starts his dialogue with me with the same killing phase: “We have a problem... and it’s a bad one.” Sometimes he is right, though 🤦🏻‍♀️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Yesterday the foreman said that he could allocate a third builder for me here. I refused. We do need a balance here! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My friends, I have just realised that I hadn’t done any post to announce a very important event in Chateau Otin recent history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The renovation of Chateau Otin has been finally started! 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Though only the left wing of the chateau will be done during this season or possibly only the ground floor of a left wing 😬 (all depends on how many “old building secrets” my little castle has) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But the important thing is - I’ve done this big step from “paper & fantasies” into “dust & reality” and that feels just so incredible! 🙃🥺🥰🤪😃😍 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Few facts first and then a little story: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👆🏻Chateau Otin is a Cultural Heritage building since 1964, mainly because of its connection to František Palacky. But today I would like to mention a different name from Chateau Otin history — Kanicky. It is the family who actually transformed the medieval fortress Otin 🏰 into the chateau 🏛. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Well... when I started this Instagram about a year ago, the first person who sent me a message in direct was a young lady from Australia. Michaela Kanicky. I had only 50 followers and suddenly a girl who has a connection to my chateau found me here. That felt so cool )) Why I am writing this today - because I would love to highlight the word “WORLD” 🌍 in the name of today’s holiday and that we all are connected. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One day life “randomly” brought me to the Czech Republic, few years after I chose to stay here, then suddenly I know more about this country (which is now my country too 🤗 ) than I’ve ever known about the country I was born in and now I am restoring the place which was built here by a great grandfather of an Australian girl who has never been to the Czech Republic. That means I am somehow related to her past now. And surely someone is doing something related to my past now too, maybe somewhere near St. Petersburg where my grandmother came from and where her family had a house and a brewery before the revolution or somewhere else... in Ukraine where my grandfather was born.. I don’t know.. maybe I am a little sentimental today 🙈 but isn’t it fascinating how the personal destinies mix us all in one big pot of a Global Heritage?! 🙂🌎🙃 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

On my side it looks like I am finally waking up from the endless winter 🌱. God, it was so monotonous ______________________________________________________ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I can’t believe my day used to start with reading law books and end with filling lines in cursive worksheets. Was that at all me the serial “killigrapher” with a sharp pen, dirty hands and red eyes? Or that person with HBO go, Netflix, Amazon Prime all together?? 🤖 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

- I applied for a membership at AMHZ (Association of Castle Owners 🏰) and presented Chateau Otin to their board of directors yesterday, so now waiting to hear back from them if we are accepted 🤞🏻⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Our architect applied for some grands for the roof again, going to meet him on Monday to get some update🤞🏻⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Happy International Writers Day 📚 to all writers! - big and small! Though it was yesterday 🙈 but I missed it. Anyway I thought it is a good day to write a little something... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As I mention very often here: František Palacký belonged to the family who owned Chateau Otin in the end of 18th century - beginning of the 19th and he was working on “The History of Czech People” here at chateau ✍🏻✍🏻✍🏻✍🏻✍🏻✍🏻⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The plan is to open a grand chateau library and to name it after Palacký. It will be located at the main grand hall and there will be very special books from all over the world there 🤍⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just thought it’s worth saying that here today (by today of course I mean yesterday)) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

By the way in January together with the major of our village (Pan Veselak) we went to the city hall to ask for a permission to place a memorial plate of František Palacky at the chateau gate, the answer was “yes” ☺️. Since then during my evening runs I’ve been taking pictures of different memorial plates I saw at the buildings in Prague. I think I have about a hundred in my phone already. Now I will need to choose the style, prepare an example of a text and then send it to NPU (National Heritage) for their approval. So hopefully by the next International Writers Day a name of a big writer will be written on our entrance gate! 😍⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
