Today, we look back at an event that took place last week, on September 27th. "Hungarian day" was organized in cooperation with our Hungarian twin-city Pécs, The Hungarian Cultural Institute in Prague, and both Czech Embassy in Budapest and Hungarian Embassy in Prague.

The people of Olomouc and tourists from all over the Czech Republic had the opportunity to taste Hungarian specialties or buy some local products. Theatre for children and a jazz concert was also part of our program. Take a look at the video below!

The month of September is coming to its end, and we have a short summary of our recent activities for you.

On September 9th, Olomouc hosted an international conference called "Meeting of V4 Partner Cities and Villages". Representatives of nearly 30 cities of the V4 region traveled to Olomouc to meet their colleagues from other cities in person.

The City of Olomouc hanged the flag of Israel yesterday in order to support the Israeli in a symbolic way in the current conflict with Palestine.

Bratislava-Stare Mesto, our twin city, has recently decided to do the same.

Před radnicí vlaje izraelská vlajka. Město Olomouc tak symbolicky vyjadřuje podporu Státu Izrael v době, kdy čelí útoku ze strany palestinského radikálního hnutí Hamás.
Již před téměř 130 lety byla v Olomouci založena Židovská obec, kterou po válce přeživší občané opět obnovili a dodnes patří mezi živé a aktivní židovské komunity. Jedou z jejích aktivit, kterou můžete zaznamenat při pouhém průchodu městem, jsou tzv. kameny zmizelých, stolpersteine. Mosazných destiček se jmény najdete v olomouckých ulicích už 270. Každý rok je zástupci Židovské obce za finančního přispění města umisťují do chodníků jako připomínku obětí holocaustu před dům, v němž nacisty zavražděný člověk naposled bydlel před deportací do koncentračního tábora.

There will be an outdoor exhibition of the wheelchaired photographer Tomas Helisek taking place in our twin city Bratislava-Stare Mesto. The exhibition was supported by the City of Olomouc and it's organized by the CzechTourism Slovakia. We are beyond happy and look forward to the other opportunities.

Dear friends of Olomouc,

we wish you a Happy Easter! Today is Great Friday which is a national holiday for us Czechs. But have you heard about our rather unusual tradition on Easter Monday? Yes, we are speaking about the whipping 😁 It is nothing aggressive though - boys braid willow branches together to make a whip we call "pomlázka" or "tatar". They decorate the whip with ribbons and then gently whip girls with it for luck. The girls in return give them chocolate or decorated easter eggs. Or slivovitz :)

On March 25 1918, the First Belarusian People’s Republic was declared. We decided to commemorate this event which is very important to the people of Belarus by hanging banners with Belarusian national flag and lighting up the Moravian Theatre.
By doing so, we also want to support the Free Belarus Initiative, which fights for democracy in Belarus.

On March 5, there was an exhibition of the famous Czech photographer Jindřich Štreit opened in Vienna. Štreit comes from Sovinec, a village near Olomouc and he dedicated his whole life to a documentary photography. He focuses on documenting rural life of people in Czech villages.

The exhibition "Village people 1965-1990" in AnzenbergerGallery in Vienna was supported by the City of Olomouc and can be visited till May 25.

Today, we would like to introduce you to the House at the Golden Deer. Located at the corner between the Upper and Lower Square, this house dates back to the late 14th century and it’s one of the oldest and the most important palaces in the city centre. The house sign of a golden deer was created most likely in the second half of the 18th century. The sign commemorates the then owner of the house, Mr. Hirsch, whose name means “deer” in German. The city centre of Olomouc is full of houses with house signs, there are also local legends bonded with some them. But the original purpose of the house signs was to provide better orientation in the city; many of them had been created before the streets in the city got their names.

We would like to share with you pictures that were created on the occasion of the Childhood Cancer Day. On this day, the Town Hall, The Trinity Column and the House at the Golden Deer light up in gold in support of the young cancer fighters and to raise the childhood cancer awareness.
