India and Myanmar share a historic bond forged through our common struggle against colonial rule, our democratic aspirations, and enduring people-to-people ties. The principles of moral leadership and justice championed by figures like Mahatma Gandhi have long inspired generations in Myanmar.
At this pivotal moment, we hope India will exercise strategic foresight and principled leadership in its engagement with Myanmar military junta. The current situation is not permanent, but rather a deeply turbulent and temporary chapter brought about by the military’s attempt to overturn the democratic will of the Myanmar people.
The junta may seek international legitimacy, but it does not possess the consent of the people at home. Myanmar people continue to resist military rule with extraordinary courage, and they will remember which neighbors stood with them in their darkest hour.
As the world’s largest democracy, India’s decisions carry profound significance and political implications. We hope India will stand with the people of Myanmar and help preserve the foundations for a future relationship built not on coercion, but on democratic legitimacy, mutual respect, and shared regional prosperity.
