The Czech Security Forum, one of the leading security conferences in the region, is returning to Prague. This year, we will meet on 22 October 2026 in the charming setting of the former baroque church at Atrium Žižkov, where some of the world's leading experts from institutions such as NATO, PRIF, Rice University, the University of Oxford and the University of Copenhagen will bring their newest insights in security, international relations and geopolitics.

This year’s edition, titled “Polarization, Interference, and Fragmentation of the Western Alliance”, will explore how growing political divisions and foreign interference are reshaping Western alliances, NATO and the future of European security. At a moment when the West is being tested not only by external threats, but also by divisions within its own societies and alliances, this debate could hardly be more timely.

🇮🇸 Náš ředitel výzkumu Jan Kovář v sobotních Televizních novinách přiblížil současné postavení Islandu vůči Evropské unii a co pro zemi znamená účast v jednotném trhu a Schengenském prostoru. Jeho komentář zazněl v souvislosti se včerejším referendem, ve kterém Islanďané rozhodovali o tom, zda má země obnovit přístupová jednání s Evropskou unií.

Co se děje na Blízkém východě nyní, když vypršelo šedesátidenní memorandum mezi USA a Íránem, a kam se může konflikt dál posunout? Pro ČT24 situaci komentovala naše výzkumnice Tereza Plíštilová, která se vyjádřila také k napětí kolem Hormuzského průlivu a íránskému jadernému programu.

„Můžeme samozřejmě očekávat, že spíš bude docházet k posilování íránského vlivu než naopak.“ Podle Plíštilové se v regionu nenaplnily předpovědi o konci íránského režimu a zároveň se objevují zprávy o obnovování kontaktů Íránu s Hizballáhem a dalších jednáních s aktéry v regionu.

🆕 Czech Journal of International Relations publishes Special Issue on Gender-Based Violence from Central and Eastern European Perspectives!

The Czech Journal of International Relations (CJIR) is pleased to announce the publication of Volume 61, Issue 2 (2026), a special issue titled “Decentring Gender-Based Violence: Central and Eastern European Perspectives in International Relations.” Guest edited by Julia Sachseder (University of Vienna) and Maryna Shevtsova (KU Leuven), the issue offers a timely and innovative contribution to debates on gender-based violence (GBV), feminist International Relations, and security studies.

The special issue argues that Central and Eastern Europe should no longer be viewed as merely a regional case study but as a source of theoretical innovation. The editors propose a new perspective on GBV as a continuum embedded in political, military, institutional, and societal structures, while highlighting the importance of voices and experiences from the region.

The issue opens with an introduction by Maryna Shevtsova and Julia Sachseder, who outline the conceptual foundations for decentring gender-based violence. The research articles then explore GBV across a range of contexts:

▪️ Christa Binswanger, Melanie Fleischhacker, Eva-Maria Graf, and Andrea Zimmermann examine the persistence of gender-based violence in academia and the challenges of making it visible.
▫️ Liubov Gordiienko analyses sexual misconduct within the Ukrainian Armed Forces during Russia’s full-scale invasion.
▪️ Patrycja Buxton and Aneta Ostaszewska investigate the silencing and normalisation of domestic and gender-based violence in Poland.
▫️ Kristina Gotthardova explores gendered violence targeting women politicians and journalists in Slovakia following the 2023 parliamentary elections.
▪️ Janet Elise Johnson and Veronika Tsiko examine Ukraine’s decolonial feminist response to conflict-related sexual violence and its implications for the Women, Peace and Security agenda.

Taken together, the articles illustrate the diverse manifestations of gender-based violence across political and societal contexts, while highlighting the analytical contributions of feminist and interdisciplinary approaches to International Relations.

Indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, the Czech Journal of International Relations continues to provide an international platform for cutting-edge scholarship addressing contemporary global challenges.

Our researcher Jan Švec, together with Zuzana Schreiberová in their new article analysed almost 1.94 million comments and more than 154,000 posts from Facebook groups to understand how online attacks against women in politics emerge and spread.

🔹 The study analyses 1.94 million comments and more than 154,000 posts from 17 Facebook groups.

🔹 Of 32 major waves of hostile communication, 29 included attacks targeting women in politics.

🔹 Sustained online hostility can discourage women from political participation, potentially weakening democratic representation across Europe.

Pokračujeme v naší letní sérii, tentokrát s ředitelem provozu a vnějších vztahů Jiřím Machem, který má pro vás dobrou zprávu rovnou z vesmíru. Po téměř půl století by mohl další Čech zamířit na oběžnou dráhu.

S rozvojem vesmírných technologií ale přicházejí i nové otázky: kdo bude určovat pravidla ve vesmíru, jak se budou využívat jeho zdroje a jakou roli bude hrát v mezinárodní politice? I těmto tématům se věnujeme v ÚMV. 🛰️

How can the European Union strengthen its digital sovereignty without deepening inequalities among its own Member States? 💻

This is the question explored by Jakub Eberle in his latest article published in the Journal of European Public Policy, a leading journal in political science.

🔹 The study examines how EU funding, digital infrastructure and representation in policy networks are distributed across Europe.

🔹 The findings indicate that Central and Eastern Europe derives comparatively limited benefits from the EU’s current digital sovereignty agenda.

🎬 Dnes na dvorku ÚMV proběhlo naše tradiční letní promítání s odbornou debatou. Přestože původně počasí nevypadalo úplně příznivě, nakonec se vydařil krásný letní večer. Mockrát děkujeme všem, kteří dorazili, za hojnou účast! 🙌

Večer zahájil náš ředitel Mats Braun. Následovala expertní debata o současném Íránu a fungování jeho islámského režimu s Janem Danielem z ÚMV a Markem Čejkou z Masarykovy univerzity, kterou moderovala naše výzkumnice Tereza Plíštilová. Děkujeme také divákům za jejich podnětné dotazy a zapojení.

Hlavním bodem večera pak bylo promítání filmu Tatami, který vypráví příběh íránské judistky Lejly. Ta během mistrovství světa čelí tlaku režimu, aby ze soutěže odstoupila. Film jsme mohli promítnout díky spolupráci s platformou Promítej i ty! 🎞️

Děkujeme všem a budeme se těšit zase příště – na dalším letním promítání nebo na některé z našich dalších akcí.
