Weltweit - Gesellschaft zur Förderung lokaler Initiativen e.V. Weltweit empowers international students and alumni to manage projects of local initiatives in the students' home countries. Weltweit e.V.

supports local initiatives worldwide and our method to get in touch with these initiatives is through oversea students who study or have studied in Germany. We help the students to become managers of an international coalition for local small-scale projects in their home countries which they judge worthy to be supported.

In southern Mozambique, the Matutuíne Bamboo Park is turning degraded land into an opportunity for both environmental recovery and local development. Spanning 16 hectares, the initiative focuses on reforesting former sand extraction sites with sustainably grown bamboo, helping to stabilize the landscape and improve resilience to climate impacts.
Beyond ecological restoration, the project invests in people. Local residents are trained in bamboo construction techniques and the production of eco-friendly charcoal, creating new income streams while promoting sustainable practices. This combined approach has earned the initiative a place as a finalist for the ClimaAward 2026.
By linking land restoration with community empowerment, the Matutuíne Bamboo Park offers a practical and scalable model for disaster risk reduction and long-term economic sustainability in vulnerable coastal areas.

The Matutuíne Bamboo Park is a climate resilience initiative in southern Mozambique dedicated to restoring 16 hectares of degraded land through sustainable bamboo reforestation. As a finalist for the ClimaAward 2026, the project combines environmental restoration with community empowerment by training local residents in bamboo construction and eco-friendly charcoal production. By transforming former sand extraction sites into a productive ecosystem, the initiative provides a scalable model for disaster prevention and sustainable economic growth in rural coastal regions.

Kibaha Beekeeping Training Project – Transforming Lives

We are proud to share the real impact of the Kibaha Beekeeping Training Project—where knowledge is turning into opportunity and communities are growing stronger every day.

So far, over 300 community members across Kibaha, Kigoma, Songea, and Singida have received hands-on training, with a strong participation of youth and women. The energy, commitment, and passion seen during these sessions truly reflect a community ready to transform their future.

Through this training, participants are not only improving their beekeeping practices but also building sustainable sources of income for their families. At the same time, they are becoming champions of environmental conservation—understanding the importance of protecting forests, biodiversity, and the ecosystems that support beekeeping.

A key highlight of the project is empowering participants with modern skills in harvesting high-quality honey, as well as branding and packaging—ensuring their products meet better standards and attract trust from consumers.

The results are inspiring: many participants are already experiencing increased income and improved livelihoods, along with growing confidence to run their own ventures.

This is more than just training—it’s about empowerment, sustainability, and real change on the ground.

Together, we are building a future where communities thrive in harmony with nature.

Some of the world's most important coastlines are in Latin America.

We are proud to be part of BLUE-ECONOMY-LAB, a collaboration we're leading together with partners in Colombia, Chile, Spain and Germany, working to strengthen vocational training in the blue economy sector across Latin America.

The project is co-funded by the EU's Erasmus+ programme and built around one shared question: how do we train the next generation of workers and educators for a sustainable ocean economy?

The focus is practical: coastal tourism, sustainable fisheries, marine biodiversity, and the green jobs that connect all of the above.

Over the past year and a half, we've been building a virtual training programme, running pilot projects on the ground in Chile and Colombia, exchanging best practices between our European and Latin American partners, and developing open-access resources that any VET provider can use in the future.

We've also brought many of these voices together at our Conference in Santa Marta, Colombia, a full programme of panels, speakers and working sessions on blue skills, ocean governance, sustainable fisheries, youth leadership and the future of blue jobs in Latin America.

We're well past the halfway point now, and there's a lot more still to share.

Exploring agroforestry solutions for salt-affected soils in southern Mozambique:

Even though the Mozambican Saline Agriculture Research and Practice (MoSARP) project formally came to an end in 2025, the partner institutions Associação dos Amigos do Bambu - ASSAMBA and IIAM Instituto de Investigação Agrária, supported by Weltweit-Cooperative for the Promotion of Local Initiatives e.V., keep up the important work. At the beginning of this year, they established a new agroforestry trial on salt-affected soils, hosted by IIAM’s ‘Saline Agriculture Best Practice Hub’ at the Moamba irrigation scheme. Under the challenging environmental conditions of the location, the performance of several promising bamboo and tree species is being evaluated. The aim is to identify suitable agroforestry species which will help to diversify local farming systems and support land restoration efforts. Students of Moamba’s technical college are closely being involved in the trial’s management and monitoring, as part of their training. We thank the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) and Netherlands Food Partnership for making this initiative happen.

Ponta do Ouro, in Matutuíne District, is renowned for its pristine beaches, rich marine life, and remarkable fauna. It is one of the rare places where some of the world’s largest mammals can be observed within the same landscape, reflecting its exceptional natural value.

Beyond its environmental significance, Matutuíne also holds a strong and living cultural heritage. One important expression of this heritage is Xigubu, a traditional dance from southern Mozambique and South Africa. Xigubu symbolizes the strength, unity, and resilience of warriors, historically performed to prepare for and commemorate battles.

At ASSAMBA, we are planning the construction of a Bamboo Community Center within the Bamboo Park, envisioned as a space where local culture and nature come together. This center will serve as a platform to celebrate, practice, and transmit cultural traditions such as Xigubu, ensuring that these expressions remain visible, valued, and alive for future generations, while being housed in a sustainable, bamboo-based structure.
