Turkey: DW journalist Alican Uludağ to be released from pre-trial detention

A court in Ankara has made the decision to release DW journalist Alican Uludağ after three months in pre-trial detention.

Charges, including insulting the president and spreading misleading information, remain in place. The trial is set to continue on September 18.

DW Director General Barbara Massing: "I am very relieved that our colleague Alican Uludağ is finally being released after three months and can return to his family in Ankara. He spent 92 days in detention without justification, mostly in solitary confinement in the high-security Silivri prison in Istanbul, far from home. It is troubling that the trial will continue, and we call for the charges to be dropped immediately."

DW awards the Freedom of Speech Award 2026 to Jimmy Lai.

For decades, the Hong Kong media entrepreneur has stood up for press freedom and democracy, even as space for independent journalism became increasingly limited. As the founder of Apple Daily, Jimmy Lai gave journalists a platform for free reporting and a voice to Hong Kong's democracy movement.

Since 2020, Jimmy Lai has been detained, much of the time in solitary confinement. In early 2026, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison under Hong Kong's national security law. His case has come to symbolize a broader crackdown on media freedom and dissent.

💬 "Jimmy Lai has stood unwaveringly for press freedom in Hong Kong at great personal risk. His commitment reminds us that press freedom is never a given – it must be constantly defended," says DW Director General Barbara Massing.

The DW Freedom of Speech Award will be presented on June 23, 2026, at the DW Global Media Forum in Bonn.

💬 "People who fight for freedom are never alone," says Jimmy Lai's son Sebastien, a message this award seeks to underline.

DW was misused in a disinformation campaign targeting the German federal government through manipulated video content.

Online posts falsely claimed that men in Germany had received SMS messages from the Bundeswehr and that tens of thousands were prevented from leaving the country in April.

🔎 Johanna Rüdiger took a closer look at the claims, featuring an assessment by Rayna Breuer from DW's fact check team.

"Chernobyl is part of our collective memory. Everyone has family or community stories about it," says 25-year-old Lena Kondratiuk from Rivne in western Ukraine. "And now, during the war, this meaning has become even more real."

For nearly 40 years, Ukraine has lived with the legacy of Chernobyl. Today, as Russia targets the country's power grid, the country faces a new nuclear risk — one that's forcing Ukraine and the world to rethink what energy security means in wartime. ⬇️

Since Chernobyl, Ukraine has lived in the shadow of nuclear disaster. Now, with Russia targeting its power grid, it's facing a new nuclear risk. The response is reshaping how the world thinks about energy in wartime.
