VALUES UNITE is an initiative advocating the establishment of a European Agency for Citizenship Education.

Our vision is to strengthen European values through citizenship education in order to preserve social and European cohesion.

This week had the opportunity to discuss citizens‘ dialog and participation in the EU with Vice-President . She stressed the need to invest in access to citizenship education to strengthen citizens skills, values and knowledge to get engaged.

Susanne Zels represented Values Unite at the panel discussion “Successful Digital Transformation of the Civil Society and the Public Sector from female Leaders” that took pace at the end of October. Together with government representatives from Germany, Portugal and Slovenia female civil society leaders discussed how digital skills and competences are increasingly important in order to participate in political and social life in the European Union. This is my digital citizenship education is essential!

Thank you for the inspiring visions of the other civil society representatives and for the German Federal Ministry of Interior for discussing this important issue.

Today, we are launching the Alliance for Citizenship Competences together with European Citizen Action Service (ECAS). The goal of the alliance is to bring together all civil society organisations and individuals seeking to enhance citizenship competences in Europe. We want to join forces to develop solutions and advocate for this goal together.

Today, presented the idea of a European Centre for Democratic Competences at the international workshop „The Challenge of citizenship education in Europe“ organised by the International Institut of Humanitarian Law. Thank you for the valuable feedback and fruitful discussion.

Today, we hosted a Workshop on participatory democracy and citizenship competences at NECE Campus. Many important questions were raised about how to establish a common understanding of what citizenship competences should be, how to monitor and test output and the process of citizenship education and the difficulty of access to citizenship education for disadvantaged groups of society. Thank you everyone for joining the debate and to the speakers and panelists for their insights!

Yesterday passed the resolution Citizens’ dialogues and Citizens’ participation in the EU decision-making (2020/2201(INI)) calling for more action on .

26. Proposes to establish a European network for citizenship education to provide a platform for the exchange of best practices and knowledge regarding methods of enhancing the European dimension of citizenship education; stresses the need for new models and instruments of citizenship education;

Today Susanne Zels presented the proposal for a European Agency for Citizenship Education and the pilot project proposal submitted at the European Parliament at NECE Network. Values Unite has been consulting citizenship education practitioners, NGOs, academia and policy-makers in order to advance its proposal for how to enhance in the EU. Our goal is for the EU to establish a supportive platform for in order to offer support to local citizenship education initiatives and foster equitable and qualitative learning opportunities for all Europeans.

We advocate for the establishment of a European Centre for Democratic Competences to include a digital learning hub, conduct monitoring and capacity building and offer a dialogue platform for citizenship educators as well as policy-makers.

As called for by Values Unite the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) at the has suggested for the to develop a comprehensive European strategy on civic and citizenship education, as well as supporting platforms to promote its implementation.

The CULT committee’s suggestions were negotiated in the OPINION on citizens’ dialogues and citizens’ participation in EU decision-making, which calls on the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, as the committee responsible, to incorporate these suggestions into its motion for a resolution.
