Uniper at the Top Women Tech in IT & Engineering in Brussels
To find the best IT and engineering talent for Uniper, we are in Brussels today. 200 candidates from all over Europe have traveled to Top Women Tech to meet with companies and conduct interviews on site. The topics of female leadership and diversity play an important role in our growth and we were delighted with the expertise and enthusiasm of the women and were able to hold many interesting discussions.

Uniper is committed to having a more diverse workforce at all levels! 💪
This is not only proven to be beneficial for us as a company, but also fair from a societal perspective. One of our targets is to increase the number of women in leadership positions. Today, on International Women's day, two members of our Women@Uniper Network Laura De Sousa Serrano & Felicia Jegede had a talk with our CEO Michael Lewis and our Asset Transformation COO Iulia Tică on how to achieve this target.

"Equality is a goal we should aim for because it is the right thing to do,” Michael explained.

This morning marked the opening of E-world 2024, and the organisers set up a press conference for the occasion. We’re thrilled that our CEO Mike Lewis took part, together with Kerstin Andreae (BDEW), Kerstin Maria Rippel (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl), Dr. Christoph Husmann (Encavis) and Dr. Niels Ellwanger (con|energy).

Mike discussed current energy related issues, answered some questions from the floor and issued a statement:

"Uniper is a different company after the crisis. The course has been set for this. There is hardly a company in Europe that is transforming itself as quickly as Uniper. In a good six years (by 2030), the colour of the portfolio will have changed from grey (80% conventional) to green (80% green portfolio). We have an exciting six years ahead of us with hard work and many new projects."

👎 Wasting heat has to be avoided, so we’re innovating to change that. Today we announced a joint project with Evonik which will turn industrial waste heat into the supply for district heating in the Ruhr region. The kind of innovation that’s essential for the energy transition. Here’s the details:

– Most industrial plants cause waste heat. Evonik seeks to instead use that heat sensibly, turning waste into a resource and contributing to sustainability. ♻️

– Uniper is installing an innovative high-temperature heat pump at Evonik’s Herne site, feeding a total of up to 1.5 megawatts of heating output into district heating. 💥

– The project will make use of our district heating pipe which already runs through the site, transferring heat into the pipes without the need for major modifications. 🧠

🐔 🚚 From chicken manure to CO2 neutral fuel for HGVs – we’re not kidding! Did you know that Uniper subsidiary Liqvis is the biggest buyer of biogas from Germany’s largest Bio-LNG Plant? And guess where that gas comes from…?

Dried chicken manure of course – sourced from Germany’s largest egg producer. 🥚 Here’s why it’s important:

✅ Bio-LNG can reduce CO2 emissions from HGVs up to 100 percent
🔄 This source of biogas makes use of waste materials that already exist
📈 There’s still progress to be made to decarbonize HGVs and biogas can be a big contributor

In order to better forecast the need for hydrogen storage capacities in the future, we are performing a comprehensive market consultation from now until the end of March 2024. Big news for the energy transition: We want to develop hydrogen storage capacity of up to 600 GWh by 2030 🚨

Hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the energy transition, but in order to ensure reliable supply to the market, new storage is urgently needed. At Uniper we are investing in meeting that need, and today announce plans to develop salt caverns in north-west Germany for large volume hydrogen storage. The facilities will have an envisaged capacity of 250-600 GWh by 2030.

The project will both investigate the possibility of converting existing underground facilities, as well as developing new facilities along the planned hydrogen core network.

With a total of more than 80 TWh of underground gas storage capacity for natural gas in Germany, Austria and the UK, Uniper is one of the largest energy storage operators in Europe.

In order to better forecast the demand for hydrogen storage capabilities as well as potential future projects, Uniper is also launching a comprehensive market consultation from today until the end of March 2024.

Torsten Marondel’s GeoFlex journey started in Portugal. It was there in the renowned Portuguese capital that the Senior Business Program Manager turned his workspace into a coastal office during the day, before exploring Lisbon’s vibrant culture in the evening.

Torsten was inspired to make Alicante, Spain his next destination. Uniper’s GeoFlex made it possible to sync up with his parents there, who had moved to the Valencian city for part of the year after retiring:
