Our friend herbert haseneder captured this image of the Sun during the total solar eclipse visible from ESO's La Silla Observatory on 2 July 2019 at the moment when most of its face was occulted by the moon.

An image of the Sun during the total solar eclipse visible from ESO's La Silla Observatory on 2 July 2019 at the moment when most of its face is occulted by the moon. The eclipse lasted roughly two and a half hours, with almost two minutes of totality, and was visible across a narrow band of Chile a...

The next ESO Cosmic Duologue will take place on Monday 6 July 2020, at 15:30 CEST and it will be about "Dust at high z". Marusa Bradac ( UC Davis , USA) and Andrea Ferrara ( Scuola Normale Superiore , Pisa, Italy) will be the invited speakers and the moderator will be Paola Andreani ( ESO Astronomy ).

ESO is organising a web-based series of Cosmic Duologues aiming to cover the current state of some of the major questions in astronomy today in a lively way, via a duologue between two professional astronomers, each expert in their field. http://orlo.uk/0fNIp

This beautiful Picture of the Week, captured with the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS) on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), shows a field of stars of all ages — some looming close in the foreground, and others lurking in the far distance.

The distinct red and blue hues are thanks to the use of filters, which only allow certain wavelength ranges of light to be collected. The images collected using different filters can be coloured and combined to create spectacular composite images such as this one.

School students from European Countries all around the World are invited to take part in the 2020 Catch a Star contest. This is a European astronomical writing contest, with some prizes that will leave students starry-eyed, including some goodies from ESO!

To participate, students should submit a written report on an astronomical topic of their own choice - for example, an astronomical object, phenomenon, observation, scientific problem or theory. Reports must be written in English and be no more than 5000 words in length. Contestants may work in groups of up to three students, plus a group leader who is not a student.

The deadline is 23 December 2020. http://orlo.uk/1Gldt

Using ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) astronomers have discovered the absence of an unstable massive star in a dwarf galaxy. Scientists think this could indicate that the star became less bright and partially obscured by dust. An alternative explanation is that the star collapsed into a black hole without producing a supernova.

“If true,” says team leader and PhD student Andrew Allan of Trinity College Dublin “this would be the first direct detection of such a monster star ending its life in this manner.”
