Protein bars and apples on the office table. A small start — but a conscious one. 🍎

Honestly, I didn’t always think much about this. But somewhere along the way, you start to notice that how you feel affects how you work, how you think, and how you show up for the people around you.

At SmartMembranes, we’re taking small steps toward looking after ourselves a little better. Healthier snacks in the office, and soon — doing some sport together as a team.

But there’s a bigger picture here too.

We work in microplastics analysis. We know what the research shows — microplastics have been found in human blood, in organs, in tissue. That’s not something we can fully reverse. But it’s something we can slow down, by understanding it better, measuring it more precisely, and ultimately reducing plastic where we can.

Our filters are part of that work. And so are our customers in medical technology and environmental research, who rely on accurate analysis to understand what’s happening — and to find answers.

Health is personal. But it’s also a topic that connects what we do every day with something much larger.

Most of our team is young. I’m not waiting until they feel the same way I do now to make it a topic. If we can build awareness — and good habits — early, that’s something worth doing.

It starts with an apple. Or a protein bar, if you prefer. 😄

Monday was a great day. 🎓

Our colleague Hardik Vaghasiya successfully defended his PhD in physics at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg — and we were there to see it.
His talk on surface modifications by ultrashort laser pulses was impressive, and the way he handled the examiners' questions showed exactly how deeply he understands his field. It was a pleasure to watch.
After the defense, we celebrated together — some nice, relaxed time with his friends and colleagues.

We're genuinely glad to have Hardik and his expertise with us. His work is directly connected to what we're building at SmartMembranes: a new product line of silicon filters manufactured through laser structuring — the LasePor filters. A real addition to what we can offer.

Congratulations, Dr. Vaghasiya. Well deserved. 👏

And that's a wrap on the IVAM Hightech Summit in Leiden. 🇳🇱☀️

What a couple of days. Familiar faces, new connections, and the kind of conversations that stick with you long after the conference is over.

The venue itself — Corpus Experience in Leiden — was a highlight on its own. Between sessions, we got to explore the exhibition on the human body. A fascinating detour from microtechnology talks, and a good reminder that understanding what happens at the smallest scales matters far beyond the lab. 🔬

And then the evening: a small business dinner, and a sunset over the North Sea that I wasn't expecting to be quite so beautiful. Moments like that don't make it onto the agenda — but they're often what you remember most. 🌅

I'll also say this: the Dutch have a way of making everything just a little more pleasant. Even the bus ride was full of friendliness and helpfulness. It's a small thing — but it says a lot about a place and its people.

Holland, until next time. 😊

We’re live at SETAC 2026 in Maastricht! 🎉

Yesterday we set up our booth and joined the opening reception — already a great start with first catch-ups with friends and partners. The best conferences really do begin before they officially open! 😊

From today until Thursday, you’ll find us at booth #92 at MECC Maastricht. We’re here to talk microplastics analysis, share our latest filtration units and filter technologies, and — most importantly — connect with the people doing the important work in this field.
If you’re here at SETAC, please come by. We’d love to meet you in person!

We're at SETAC 2026 in Maastricht – May 17–21, come visit us at booth #92! 🌿

SETAC brings together the environmental science community like no other event: researchers, decision-makers, and industry experts united by a shared commitment to advancing science and turning it into real-world impact. It's one of those conferences where every conversation matters — and that's exactly why we love being there.

From May 17 to 21, you'll find us at booth #92 at MECC Maastricht, Netherlands — and we'd genuinely love for you to stop by.

We'll be showcasing our latest filtration units and filter technologies designed for microplastics analysis — developments we've been working hard on and are really excited to share in person. Whether you want a detailed walkthrough, a quick look, or just a coffee and a chat about where the field is heading — our team will be there for all of it.

Microplastics analysis is moving fast, and events like SETAC are where the important conversations happen. We're proud to be part of that community and to contribute with solutions that help make the science more accessible and reliable.

So if you're attending — please come find us. No appointment needed. Just look for booth #92. 👋

Something we've been working on for a while is finally taking shape. 🙌

Microplastics and nanoplastics are everywhere — in our water, our air, our food. And while the research community is making great progress, one thing remains clear: we still have more questions than answers.

That's exactly why we're organizing a workshop dedicated to just that.

We're bringing together scientists, researchers, and industry experts for two days of:
→ Keynote talks & poster session
→ Live demonstrations — see the analysis in action
→ Regulatory updates & open exchange on where legislation is heading
→ Real conversations between science and industry

If you're working in this field, or simply want to understand where the science — and the regulation — is heading, this is the place to be.

More details coming soon — but mark your calendars! 📌

🔬 Microplastics in urban fountains – an underestimated problem.

A new study, published together with Częstochowa University of Technology, reveals: microplastics are found everywhere in urban fountains – from Gliwice and Rybnik to Halle (Saale), Germany.

The findings are interesting:
→ Up to 110 particles per liter measured in Polish cities
→ Significantly lower levels in Halle – local conditions make the difference
→ Fibers, fragments, pellets, and foils – every fountain tells its own story

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:
Urban fountains are publicly accessible, directly exposed – and largely unstudied. They reflect what is happening in our urban environment.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿:
Precise analysis starts with the right filter. Our silicon membranes enable reliable detection of microplastic particles – including sub-micron ranges – and form the foundation for trustworthy research results like these.
Science needs reliable methods. We provide them. 💡

🌏 Back from Seoul — and still reflecting on a fantastic week!

Last week we had the chance to visit LabSpinner and meet the team behind the ExoDiscovery® system — a beautifully engineered platform for fast, gentle isolation of extracellular vesicles (EVs) at the nanoscale.

For us, this visit had a very personal dimension: SmartMembrane’s silicon filters are built right into the ExoDisc® — the core component of the system. Sitting across the table from the people who work with our technology every day, and talking about how we can make it even better together — that’s the kind of conversation that reminds you why you do this work. 🔬

We’ve agreed to build on this foundation with a long-term cooperation, focused on jointly optimizing our filter solutions for the ExoDisc® platform. Lots to look forward to.

A big thank you to David Lee and the LabSpinner team for the incredibly warm welcome and the open, inspiring exchange. We left Seoul energized — and already looking forward to the next steps! 🤝
