Die GSB nimmt seit langem erfolgreich am Wettbewerb "Jugend Debattiert“ teil. Seit 2013 haben Schülerinnen und Schüler die Möglichkeit, sich auch auf Englisch mit Gleichaltrigen zu messen. rvater des Debating in Deutschland, gab Schülern und Lehrern einen ersten Einblick in das, was international an vielen Schulen fester Bestandteil des Curriculums ist. Das Format "World Schools Debate" unterscheidet sich merklich vom dem in Deutschland etablierten Format "Jugend Debattiert". Basierend auf der Tradition des britischen Parlaments diskutieren beide Seiten ("Häuser") zu vorgegebenen Themen, während drei Richter die Debatte bewerten. Die Themen variieren von bekannten Fragestellungen aus dem Alltag, bis hin zu politischen Themen. Um die internationale Vergleichbarkeit herzustellen debattieren die Kontrahenten auf Englisch. Bereits während des Referendariats in Süddeutschland leiteten Ines Enderlin und Sebastian Kruse gemeinsam eine Debating AG. Mit Unterstützung der Schulleitung fand Debating eine Heimat im Sprachprofil "Language Live" der GSB. Unter Anleitung der erfahrenen Kollegen und mit der Unterstützung von Susan Roth begann das Projekt nach den Sommerferien 2013. 45 Schülerinnen und Schüler der GSB-Sprachprofile lernten zunächst spielerisch den Umgang mit der britischen Form des Debattierens. Es wurden Themen wie "Snickers oder Twix", "McDonalds oder Burger King", oder "Sollte Facebook einer Altersbeschränkung unterliegen?" diskutiert und viele Übungsformen zum freien sprechen bewältigt. Eine erste interne Debatte sorgte für großen Beifall bei den Mitschülern und steigende Motivation bei den Teilnehmern. Guter Kontakt zum Vorsitzenden der Debating Society Germany Christopher Sanchez führte dazu, dass dieser sich bereit erklärte mit seiner Stellvertreterin Jana Gilke einen weiteren Workshop an der GSB zu halten. Allerdings unter der Bedingung, dass die GSB an den Europen 2013 in Stuttgart teilnehmen solle. Die Europen 2013 sollten den Auftakt bedeuten zur Teilnahme bei einer Reihe von internationalen Wettbewerben, an der die "GSB Debating Society" seither teilgenommen hat: ob bei der "Prague Spring Debate“ in Tschechien, "ARGO OPEN“ in Rumänien oder auch bei nationalen Wettbewerben in Rottweil und Würzburg. Zwar mussten die Teams insbesondere gegen die starke internationale Konkurrenz schon manche Niederlage verkraften, doch konnten wir immer wertvolle Erfahrungen sammeln und beim Practice zuhause dann daran arbeiten. Großen Spass bringt auch unsere jährliche "Christmas-Debate", bei der die Lehrer gegen ein Schülerteam in den "Ring" steigen. Leider konnten die Lehrer noch nie gewinnen, man sagt das Publikum sei parteiisch ...

Einen der Höhepunkte stellte 2015 die Austragung der German School Debating Championship an der GSB dar. Teams aus ganz Deutschland reisten zu uns nach Hamburg, um sich im Wortgefecht zu messen. Der Sieg ging schließlich an das Parler-Gymnasium aus Süddeutschland, doch das GSB Team konnte ebenfalls einige "wins" verzeichnen. Debating ist zu einem festen Bestandteil der GSB geworden, wir sind gespannt, was noch kommen wird ...

We are thrilled to introduce the first member of our amazing Chief Adjudicators‘ Panel!!!

Miha Andrič is an experienced international WSCD judge. In the recent past he served as Chief Adjudicator at many international tournaments such as Nordic Schools Competition 2018, Bluebonnet Texas 2018, Green-hill 2019, EurOpen 2017, Prague Debate Spring 2019, Finland nationals 2017 and many others. He was also a member of the motion committee at tournaments such as USA nationals 2018 and JSMU Pakistan 2016. Miha is working as an international debate trainer. Currently he is Head of Education national debate organisation Slovenia and is serving as a Head of Faculty or Program Director at different international debate academies (Mediterranean Schools Debate Academy, Moscow Schools Debate Academy, Debate Italy Academy, ESU Turkey Debate Academy). As a quest lecturer he trains students, teachers and judges at debate programs and academies all around the world, from USA, UK, and Canada to Russia, Israel, Palestine, Tunisia and many European countries such as Finland, Italy and Germany. In 2014 he was Head Coach of the Turkish national WSDC team, and has been Head Coach of the Slovenian national team since 2015. He is also head of the speech and debate program at Bežigrad High School and Member of the Curricula team the IDEA debate international organisation.

We are incredibly proud to announce that EurOpen 2019 Hamburg will return to our school for a second time after 2016. Thank you Christopher Sanchez & Debating Society Germany for the trust!
To kick off the festivities we had a mind blowing 3 – day workshop with returning CA Miha Andrič. We couldn’t be more grateful. Also, we welcome back THE Tab Master Aljoša Polšak to our crew. Stay tuned.

„The risk, the risk“, Mr. Kruse said
And Ms. Heinrichs continued: „Magic is bad.“
Then Mr. Schuster, he seemed very sure
„We don´t need Gandalf´s magic, not anymore“

And Touali replied: „What about the kids“
„And poor Arthur Weasley, he´s unhappy, yes“,
Said Lotta, right before Pauline grabbed the mic: “come on everybody, let´s eat, it´s almost christmas!”

So that´s what we did
We talked and we ate
We ate and we talked
And the day started to fade

EurOpen 2018 Stuttgart were a blast! Thanks to Miha Andrič, Christopher Sanchez and countless others for making it a great tournament! We enjoyed the ride. Long hours of prep and general awesomeness lead to three wins!!!! We are incredibly proud of our results and extremely thankful for all the constructive feedback! We still believe in fairies & will never stop to use Titanic analogies!!! On to the next one...

Bittersweet times in Mannheim at Debating Society Germany e.V. Junior League Finals 2018! Rocked the speaker rankings with two third places for Pauline & Lotta! Missed the semi finals. Said good bye to coach Lara. Got closer to becoming a vegetarian debate society & had a blast with all of it! Special thanks to Eric Swanson for coaching sessions and city tour!

For the first time we participated at Nordic Schools Debating Championships which took place in Copenhagen. Both teams finished with 3 out of 6 wins. Long prep nights, great discussions, interesting food, a cold bike trip, beautiful locations, good teamwork and a lot of fun. We are looking forward to our next trip :)

As a new season kicks off, it's time to take a look back at our last trip to GSDC Stuttgart in June. The GSB Juniors finished 3-2 and put an exclamation mark on their ambition to win one of the Junior events in the upcoming season!
