✨ Save the date: 5 September 2026 – Heidelberg Castle Illumination

One of Heidelberg’s most iconic evenings is returning: the Heidelberg Castle Illumination. 🏰🎆

At around 10:15 pm, Heidelberg Castle will once again glow red above the Old Town – followed by the traditional fireworks over the Neckar.

The red illumination recalls the destruction of the castle during the War of the Palatine Succession in 1689 and 1693. The tradition of celebrating with fireworks reaches even further back: in 1613, Elector Frederick V commissioned a festive display to welcome his wife, Elizabeth Stuart, to Heidelberg.

Today, the Castle Illumination is one of Heidelberg’s best-known traditions – and on 5 September, the castle will once again take centre stage.

Many visitors only notice it at second glance: the sundial on the Hall of Glass. ☀️🕰️
Dating back to around 1540, it tells the time without any technology – using only sunlight and a metal gnomon casting a shadow.

Especially fascinating are the signs of the zodiac surrounding the dial. ✨♈♌♎
Over the course of the year, the tip of the shadow moves between the lines of the individual zodiac signs. This means the sundial indicates not only the time of day, but also the season.

So next time you’re exploring the castle courtyard, make sure to look up 👀
Did you notice the sundial during your last visit?

Walking through Heidelberg Castle, you quickly realize there’s a different view waiting around almost every corner ☀️🏰

One moment you’re standing on the Scheffel Terrace overlooking the Old Town, the Neckar and the Old Bridge.
A few steps later, the Altan opens up to wide views across Heidelberg and the Neckar Valley.
And then the Stückgarten suddenly feels a bit quieter 🌿

Between the Broken Tower, old walls and the Elisabeth Gate, it’s easy to stop for a moment — not just because you can see all the way to the Rhine plain.

Especially in spring, these are the small moments that keep people coming back to the castle.

Where’s your favorite place at the castle to pause and take in the view? 😊
