GESIS Panel

GESIS Panel Our entire data is also accessible for secondary data analyses.

We offer you unique opportunities for collecting your own high-quality survey data free of charge with either the representative GESIS Panel.pop or the GESIS Panel.dbd linked to web tracking. The GESIS Panel offers the social science community a unique opportunity to collect survey data from a representative sample of the German population free of charge. Data collected within the GESIS Panel will

be available for both primary researchers fielding their own studies and secondary researchers. The mixed-mode self-administered surveys (web-based surveys and mail surveys) are fielded on a bi-monthly basis with each wave consisting of two major parts: About fifteen minutes of survey time is reserved for the studies submitted by primary researchers. The second part of each survey wave (about five minutes of interviewing time) includes longitudinal core study topics developed by GESIS.

Last month, the GESIS Panel Team participated in the 18th Workshop of Panel Surveys in German-speaking countries. The workshop provided an inspiring forum for exchange among researchers working with panel data and a valuable opportunity to share experiences across different survey infrastructures.

The GESIS Panel Team also contributed with a poster presented by Dr. Patricia Hadler, Dr. Charlotte Löb and Dr. Steffen Pötzschke on the implementation and documentation of research ethics principles in the GESIS Panel.pop Population Sample.
They addressed
🔹 the application of RatSWD-based ethical guidelines,
🔹 challenges in documenting ethical standards in ongoing panel surveys,
🔹 and the transferability of this approach to other survey programs.

In addition, Katharina Kraft presented our documentation infrastructure for the GESIS Panel.dbd Digital Behavioral Data Sample, including an R Shiny-based interface that brings together codebooks, wave reports, and other documentation sources in one place. The presentation focused on the practical advantages and limitations of this open-source solution.

We are grateful for the inspiring discussions and the opportunity to exchange experiences with colleagues from many different panel studies. Many thanks to the FReDA Panel and the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) for the excellent organization of this year’s workshop!

Recap of Day 2 at the GESIS Panel.dbd Insight Days:

The second day focused on moving from data to research design.

We started with an introduction to HTML parsing, showing how web tracking data can go beyond URLs and traces to analyze the content of websites visited by panelits.

Later, Frank Mangold provided a structured approach to thinking about web tracking study designs within the GESIS Panel.dbd framework.

A key takeaway: even complex research ideas can often be clarified with a simple project kick-starter (see graphic).

Many thanks to all participants for the thoughtful discussions and inspiring ideas. We’re excited to see the research that will grow from them.

Recap of Day 1 at the GESIS Panel.dbd Insight Days:

We kicked off the workshop by diving into the foundations of the GESIS Panel.dbd infrastructure.

Participants learned about:
• the recruitment and structure of the panel
• how web tracking data are collected
• how digital traces (URLs, timestamps, HTML) are generated and stored

In the afternoon, two hands-on sessions introduced the structure of both the survey and web tracking data. Working directly with the data allowed participants to explore what is technically possible — and what requires careful consideration.
A full day dedicated to understanding the data before designing research with it.

Last week, we hosted the GESIS Panel.dbd Insight Days in Mannheim — two days dedicated to exploring how web tracking data and survey data can be combined for social science research.

18 researchers from different fields came together to better understand the possibilities — and limitations — of working within the GESIS Panel.dbd infrastructure. The workshop combined methodological input, technical insights, and hands-on exploration of the data structure.

Over the next two posts, we will share some highlights from
🔹 Day 1: Understanding the data and its collection
🔹 Day 2: From HTML parsing to web tracking study design

Stay tuned!
