On this historic day, the International Democracy Union joins the American people in celebrating this remarkable anniversary and reaffirms the values that have defined our alliance for generations: a shared commitment to freedom, democracy, and the right of people to govern themselves.

The IDU condemns the coordinated arson attacks on Νέα Δημοκρατία party members that took place on July 1 in , , targeting the homes of three officials – candidate Aphrodite Nestora, Thessaloniki Party Branch Chairman Zisis Ioakeimovits, and former MP Savvas Anastasiadis.

We mourn the death of Ms. Nestora’s mother, Vagia Nestora, and extend our deepest condolences to her family, along with our wishes for a swift recovery to all those injured.

There is no place for political violence in a democratic society. The IDU stands in full solidarity with New Democracy, and trusts that those responsible will be identified and held to account.

The IDU extends its deepest condolences to the people of following the devastating earthquakes of June 24. We mourn the hundreds of lives lost and stand in solidarity with all those affected across Caracas, La Guaira, and the surrounding regions.

We urge the international community to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need without delay. The people of Venezuela deserve support, dignity, and hope in this moment of tragedy.

Today, we celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the International Democracy Union.

On June 24, 1983, leaders including Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Minister-President Franz Josef Strauss came together in London with a simple but powerful idea: that democratic, centre-right parties should work together across borders to advance freedom and strengthen democracy worldwide.

43 years later, the IDU has grown into a global alliance of more than 65 member-parties spanning every continent, united by those same enduring values.

As we mark this anniversary, we are grateful for the generations of leaders, member-parties, and citizens who have helped build and strengthen this remarkable alliance - and who continue to carry its founding ideals forward.

The International Democracy Union (IDU) strongly condemns the systematic political repression carried out by the Government of Côte d’Ivoire against our member-party, the Parti Démocratique de Côte d’Ivoire – Rassemblement Démocratique Africain (PDCI-RDA), and its leader Tidjane Thiam, the recipients of the 2025 IDU Bush-Thatcher Award for Freedom.
The October 2025 presidential election, in which President Alassane Ouattara secured a contested fourth term, took place without the participation of several major opposition figures, including PDCI-RDA Leader Tidjane Thiam, who had been excluded from the electoral roll. The exclusion of legitimate opposition candidates fundamentally compromised the inclusiveness and credibility of the vote.
