ecoSYNTH² — Film Festival Programme 🌱🎞️

The second edition of ecoSYNTH² Film Festival unfolds this Friday 30.01, as part of TOP Lab’s programme for Vorspiel 2026 (CTM × transmediale) — inside our underground BIOLAB.

A full-day constellation of film screenings, VR works, talks, exhibitions, and performances, exploring living interfaces, multispecies alchemy, and more-than-human ways of sensing, remembering, and imagining the world.

Three curated screening programmes run throughout the day, tracing ecologies across landscapes, cultures, myths, and technologies — with the final programme followed by the ecoSYNTH² Awards.

The film screenings are part of our two-day ecoSYNTH² programme.

ecoSYNTH² returns for its second edition, hosted by TOP Lab, Berlin’s first DIY biolab and transdisciplinary community space.

A two-day gathering of films, performances, talks, workshops, exhibition, and a three-stage club night—exploring living interfaces, multispecies alchemy, biohacking, and more-than-human ecologies, where digital media meets living systems.

Dear friends, collaborators, community members, and supporters,

As many of you know, >top Association for the Promotion of Cultural Practice has been active in Berlin since 2002. Our collective includes artists, researchers, architects, and activists engaged in practices from individual research to collective curating and transnational collaboration. Our shared and open infrastructure supports projects that embrace interdisciplinary methods, radical imagination, and community-oriented experimentation.

We are delighted to announce that, after many successful, passionate, and inspiring years, Mindaugas Gapševičius and Juan Pablo Díaz have stepped down from their long-term roles as co-chairs of the association. Following the recent election, Yelta Köm and Xristina Sarli were elected as the new co-chairs and will continue this collective journey together with the broader >top community.

In this new phase, >top will continue to operate as an open project space at Schätzelbergstr. 1–3, Berlin, enabling artistic, discursive, and research-based projects at the intersections of politics, ecology, technology, and society. We will continue to foster dialogue, support collaborative and transdisciplinary projects, and embrace diversity across artistic and activist practices through exhibitions, panels, workshops, and collective gatherings.

We sincerely thank Mindaugas and Juan Pablo for their dedication, vision, and the spirit of generosity they brought to >top. Their contributions have been fundamental in shaping our community and its ethos.
Looking ahead, we warmly invite you to co-shape the next chapter together with us. As a new board, we are eager to expand collaborations and explore new directions in ecology, sustainable fashion, spatial practices, performance, q***r and diverse perspectives, bio-lab activities, and workshops.
Please feel free to reach out, share your ideas, visit us, and subscribe to our mailing list to stay updated on upcoming events. Let’s continue building this space together — through dialogue, experimentation, collectivity, and care.

Spatial Narratives Beyond Geographies
First Event: July 19, 2025

⚠️ Update: Our first public event has been rescheduled to Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 5:00 PM. We are hosting Merve Gül Özokcu and Zeynep Ataş for this inaugural event.

Spatial Narratives Beyond Geographies is a year-long public program initiated by TOP e.V. dedicated to exploring architecture and spatial practice beyond disciplinary, geographic, and institutional boundaries. The series brings together a diverse group of practitioners—architects, researchers, activists, and artists—who work at the intersections of community-based design, cultural heritage, and socio-ecological transformation.
The program centers on alternative architectural narratives that emerge from contested territories, peripheral geographies, and informal or collective spatial strategies. It asks: How can architectural and spatial practices respond to displacement, ecological crisis, and social marginalization? What kinds of built environments and spatial imaginaries emerge from solidarity, memory, and repair?

Join us tomorrow for Open Studios Tempelhof

This year’s bio-art exhibition at >top showcases ongoing explorations at the intersection of biology, art, and technology. Working with living organisms—primarily algae and fungi—our hybrid projects explore sustainable materials, speculative tools, and community-rooted research.
Highlights include:
🧪 A pee-powered energy reactor
👕 Kombucha based garments and performance
🍄 Mushroom leather fashion
♻️Upcycling T-shirt workshop
🧬 A VR/AR mycofabrication school

>top is located at Zebrahaus, a former industrial site on the Teltow Canal just south of Tempelhofer Feld. For Open Studios Tempelhof, we’ll be hosting a full evening of performances, installations, and live music.

Surrounding Zero Waste Day 2025, , , , , and will join forces to celebrate fungi-powered solutions transforming waste into prima materia through WORLD WIDE WASTE (link in bio). This innovative series of physical and virtual events launches officially on International Zero Waste Day, March 30, 2025.

After a full year of transdisciplinary collaboration between bioartists, fashion designers, and sustainability researchers reimagining ecological zero-waste futures, Xristina Sarli, bioartist and curator at TOP LAB, and Andrea Bonfini, sustainable fashion designer at FADE OUT LABEL, created WORLD WIDE WASTE. This more-than-human platform and Open-Access Mycofabrication School utilizes fungi to explore innovative methods of transforming fashion waste into sustainable materials.

Located at RARE Berlin, FADE OUT LABEL repurposes fabric waste—including curtains, bedsheets, parachutes, and old denim—crafting unique, affordable, unisex, and size-inclusive garments. To enhance this sustainable process, Sarli and Bonfini employed mushroom mycelium to convert even challenging fabric scraps and powdered denim into eco-friendly mushroom leather.

WORLD WIDE WASTE officially launches on International Zero Waste Day, March 30, 2025, featuring a virtual lab-exhibition accessible at https://newart.city/show/world-wide-waste-2025. Concurrently, TOP LAB, Berlin’s first bio lab and transdisciplinary community, will initiate a series of hybrid activities, including a streaming session. From March 31, RARE Berlin will host the physical portion of the World Wide Waste exhibition showcasing multispecies collaborations and sustainable fashion creations, with a special zero-waste talk conducted by Andrea Bonfini and Xristina Sarli on April 1, celebrating the transformative intersection of fashion waste and fungi.
