April 30 >>> International day of Jazz
What do jazz music and solid state physics have in common?
Let’s start with the latter. In solid-state physics, there are fascinating phenomena that scientists call emergent phenomena. Superconductivity (the conduction of electric charge without any losses) and magnetism are examples.
Emergent phenomena can only arise in systems with many particles, where the particles are constantly interacting with one another. Through these interactions, they can organize and form new states of matter—states that would be impossible to observe if the particles simply acted independently and did not interact.
And jazz? Think of a jazz band. Each note a musician plays is not just for themselves, but a way of communicating with the other players. They exchange flats and sharps, sudden rhythmic changes, engaging in a constant dialogue that creates something entirely new! Sounds familiar?
Happy Jazz Day, everybody! 🎷
