It’s Constitution Day today, which means lots of flags in Odense - though to be fair, Danes fly the Dannebrog for almost any happy occasion 🎉

In Denmark, the flag isn’t just a national symbol. It’s basically an everyday symbol 🇩🇰

Danes display it for everything - from birthdays to the Christmas tree, and honestly, it’s kind of adorable.

Here are a few of the ways the Dannebrog shows up in everyday life:
Little flags on the bus - If you spot little Dannebrog flags on the bus, it’s a sign that it is a public holiday or a special day, like the Monarch’s birthday. For example, today, for Constituition Day, keep an eye out to see them.

Airport arrivals - Someone important arriving or national team reception? No, it’s just the Danish way of welcoming their family and friends back in the country.

Birthday celebrations - Flags on cakes, tables, napkins, cups, everywhere. If you go out to a restaurant, they even place a flag on your table. And at work, they probably will decorate your desk with flags. How cute is that?

Flagpoles in the yard - People raise the flag for birthdays or special occasions. It’s not political or nationalistic; it’s just… Danish. But if you’re new here, it can feel very official.

With the good weather finally showing up, parks and gardens suddenly become extra inviting - and you’ll start seeing Danes pull out all sorts of classic garden games🏏🌞

Most of them are also played around the Nordics, though the rules can change a bit depending on where you learned them.

You might even recognize a few from back home, but here are some fun ones you can jump into and try yourself.

Kubb, also known as Kongespil
One of the most popular garden games in Denmark and you’ll spot people playing it in parks all summer. It’s a throwing battle where two teams use wooden batons to knock down the other team’s blocks (kubbs) before finally toppling the king to win.

Rundbold
It kinda of looks like a easier version of baseball, but it’s one that many Danes start playing in primary school. It’s a team game where one side hits a ball and runs a rectangular loop while the other fields it, with a designated stopper catching the ball and calling “STOP” to end the run, and the team with the most points at the end wins.

Langbold
Similar to rundbold, but different. It’s a bat‑and‑run game where players hit the ball and sprint along the field’s boundary line to score points while the opposing team tries to tag them with the ball. Unlike rundbold, where runners loop around bases, langbold uses a long straight run and allows players to choose when to sprint.

Other ones to add to your list: crocket and spikeball.

If you’re curious to try some of these classic Danish games, you might want to join the next Chat in Danish meetup on June 7 in Munke Mose 🌿

This time, the informal Danish practice will take place in the park and if people are up for it, we might even squeeze in a quick round of Kongespil for even more fun.

Swipe for some recommendations to plug into your playlist 🎧

Music is a great way to improve your Danish and get a feel for the culture. It also helps avoiding that moment of being completely lost when a Danish song suddenly comes on the radio or at a party 🎶

You can also join Chat in Danish on June 7 for even more language practice - and this next one is special 🌟

It’s the last session before the summer holidays, and we’re doing a relaxed picnic at Munke Mose. Perfect for sharing songs with the group and practicing Danish in a relaxed way.

“Why does your child get greeted before you in Denmark?” 👋

If you’ve ever asked yourself that question, or found yourself wondering about some of the small cultural quirks from the kindergarten gate to everyday life in Denmark, you are definitely not alone.

That was one of the questions explored during yesterday´s event with Anatolie, who shared reflections on Danish culture through the lens of everyday parenting experiences, and why some parts of life in Denmark can feel both familiar and surprisingly different for internationals. He showed how Denmark’s “inclusively exclusive” culture shapes how we connect, collaborate, and understand each other.

A few takeaways from the evening:

⚖️ Equality is practiced - not just talked about
Children are encouraged to participate, speak up, and be heard from an early age. Across workplaces, schools, and communities, hierarchy is often toned down in favor of shared responsibility and involvement.

🤝 Trust shapes everyday life
From babies sleeping outside cafés to children being given responsibility early on, trust plays a huge role in Danish society. As Anatolie put it: “Control is good - but trust is cheaper.”

🧩 Independence is expected
People are often trusted to take initiative and figure things out themselves - a mindset Anatolie compared to building LEGO without instructions. In Denmark, this is often seen not as a burden, but as a strength.

🚪 Privacy matters
Danes value personal boundaries and close social circles, which can sometimes be interpreted as distance. But often, connections simply take time and grow through shared activities and communities.

😂 Humor helps
A light tone and the ability to laugh at yourself can go a long way in Danish culture, where directness is often paired with informality and irony.

A heartfelt thank-you to Anatolie for his honesty, humour, and thought-provoking perspectives, and to everyone who joined the conversation and shared their own reflections and experiences 🌍

The event was organized in collaboration with Syddansk Universitet – University of Southern Denmark.

You might have seen this abbreviation pop up on signs or heard people say it - but what is it? BMO stands for “bolle med ost” which is nothing more or less than a bun with cheese 🧀🥖

It might feel like a “new trend,” but it’s been on café signs and menus for a while.

And honestly… it’s way easier to pronounce than half of the beloved Danish pastries.

It might be a simple combo, but simple is good sometimes. Not everything needs to be about pastries and sugar ✨
