Susan Te Kahurangi King has a riotous œuvre of terrifying, hilarious, lewd, and ornery drawings. In counterpoint stands the artist herself, who does not read, write, or speak. The promotion of her art depends entirely on other people. She cannot give an interview or tell you what her drawings mean. The only way to get to know her, besides looking at her work, is to be next to her in a room. “And so I found myself in Auckland,” Laura Preston writes. Have you read ‘The Vegetarian’? Han Kang’s international breakthrough novel is about a Korean woman who suddenly decides not to eat meat.

The story focuses on the seemingly ordinary lives of Yeong-hye and her husband, an office worker. Yeong-hye vows to give up eating meat, and her rebellion manifests in ever more bizarre and frightening forms.

Intriguingly, while Yeong-hye is silent in the novel, her story is instead told in three different narratives by family members. Their different reactions, from abhorrence to poisonous envy, create shed light on a patriarchal society obsessed by careerism and rigid – sometimes tyrannical – social norms.

Han Kang received the Nobel Prize in Literature 2024 for “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”
