Today is international primate day🐵🦧🦍

Currently, ~70% of all primate species are listed by the IUCN as threatened and 94% have declining populations.
2& The trafficking of these species have greatly exacerbated conservation problems worldwide through unsustainable harvesting, specifically for unethical tourism and the pet trade.

⚠️ The most important thing YOU can do as a tourist is to never support places that allow close interactions with primates including feeding, touching, or taking close photos of.

➡️ Likewise on social media it is important to never give likes, comments, or any engagements to video or photos promoting close or cuddly interactions with primates.

Our volunteers are essential to everything we do. From day one, you’ll see how your time and effort directly support our work and improve the lives of the animals in our care. Along the way, you’ll also have plenty of fun and build meaningful connections with like-minded people from around the world💚🌎

Why do we have volunteer fees? 🧐 Amazoonico is a non-profit organization. Volunteer fees support daily operations, fair wages for local staff, volunteer food and housing, and the care of the 175+ animals at our rescue center.

If you want to make a real difference for animals and the planet, are interested in learning about wildlife management and conservation, and dream of experiencing the beauty of the Amazon Rainforest, then volunteering at Amazoonico is the perfect choice for you. 🌿🐾

Today’s Wild Wednesday features the growing friendship blossoming between our two permanent resident tayras, Emma 💕 and Igu 🐾

Tayras are often described as solitary animals, but the reality is that their social lives are still not fully understood. There is currently a lot of scientific investigation underway, and camera trap studies are showing us that they may be more social than previously thought 🧐

A recent enclosure upgrade has given them the best of both worlds: plenty of space to move around and enjoy their independence, while also giving them the choice to interact when they both feel like socializing. And lately, we’ve been loving watching their relationship blossom! 🌸

Providing animals with the space and choice to express their natural behaviors allows them to show us just how complex their social lives can be ✨

A big big THANK YOU to this incredibly special group of volunteers 🌿🐾

Leonora (🇩🇪) and Kaja (🇩🇪) thank you for dedicating an entire year of your life to us. Your support and love for the people and the animals at our rescue center has been so important to us, and we can’t imagine what the last year would’ve looked like without you.

Andrew (🇺🇸) you have left such an impact on the developing spider monkey program, and have led the pre-release study with such positive energy and dependendable dilligince. We cannot wait to release the little troop in the coming weeks🐒

Emiel (🇩🇪) thank you for dropping in when we needed you most, for taking tons of wonderful content, and for always helping with the heavy lifting, for an entire year! We wish you all the best in your future 🎥

Val (🇫🇷) Amelie (🇩🇪) Vanessa (🇩🇪) Charlotte (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿) Saran (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿) and Pilar (🇪🇨) thank you for all your hard work and we hope to see each of you again one day 🫶🏼
