La Hesperia Reserve La Hesperia is a nature reserve located in the western range of the Andes at an altitude of 1100 – 2040 meters above sea level.

With an area of 814 hectares, it is located in the center of the Rio Toachi-Chiriboga IBA (Important Bird Area, declared by Bird Life International and Conservation International) and it is part of twoimportant bioregions: The Tropical Andes and the Choco Darien – Western Ecuador, considered within the top five biodiversity hotspots on earth. The station works in natural conservation, combating deforestation, protecting existing forest, restoring degraded areas and searching for sustainable activities that enable us to support the reserve and to offer a better way of life for the local community as well as those who work and live at the reserve. La Hesperia encompasses three types of forest: pre-montane evergreen, low montane and high montane (cloud forest). The work that we do at La Hesperia is extremely important in terms of preserving the biodiversity of the cloud forest and protecting local watersheds. Our work focuses on protecting existing forests through reforestation, monitoring the impact of human activity and conducting environmental education. La Hesperia is also striving to become a model of integrated farming where agricultural practices complement our primary objective of preserving the natural forest. Combining conservation and agriculture will enable us to sustain the reserve and promote economic activities that are environmentally friendly and beneficial for the local inhabitants. We are open to cooperation agreements with conservation and social institutions and are a part of the Jatun Sacha Foundation and members of the Aves & Conservación NGO (Ecuadorian partner of Bird Life International) for the better achievement of our goals. La Hesperia’s main goals are:

• Protecting existing forest
• Maintaining the reserve as an IBA (Important Bird
Area)
• Working towards sustainable development
• Creating programs to foster community development
• Restoring degraded areas within and outside the
reserve
• Educating the public about conservation and ecology
• Conducting research
• Sharing our experiences with nature enthusiasts,
local communities and volunteers.

**CAMERA TRAP FILES | #6**

A Collared Forest Falcon taking a quiet break in the cloud forest.

Our camera trap caught this elusive forest raptor resting on a branch, giving us a rare look at a bird that can be difficult to spot among the dense vegetation.

Another unexpected moment from La Hesperia’s forest.

This Wednesday: the glass frog.

Small, delicate, and remarkably adapted to life in the cloud forest, glass frogs are known for their translucent skin and their close connection to clean, humid forest habitats.

At La Hesperia, they are part of the extraordinary diversity found within the reserve.

AMERA TRAP FILES | #5

Not everything our camera traps record is wildlife.

These dogs were captured moving through the forest, a recurring challenge for La Hesperia. Free-roaming dogs can disturb wildlife, hunt native species, and move through areas where they do not belong.

Camera traps help us document these incursions and better understand the challenges involved in protecting a living forest.

**CAMERA TRAP FILES | #4**

A white-tailed deer moving quietly through the cloud forest.

These deer are rarely seen by visitors, but our camera traps reveal just how much wildlife moves through the reserve when the forest seems still.

Another glimpse into the hidden life of La Hesperia.

This Wednesday: the Ecuadorian capuchin monkey.

Capuchins are intelligent, social, and highly adaptable primates. At La Hesperia, they are one of the species we encounter in the cloud forest, sometimes high in the trees and, on rare occasions, moving along the forest floor.

There is always more to discover about the species that share this forest with us.

CAMERA TRAP FILES | #3

Not every day do we catch monkeys on the ground.

Most of the time, they move through the trees, which makes this recording especially unusual. Our camera trap captured a mother carrying her young on her back as they passed along the forest floor.

A rare glimpse of life in the cloud forest.

From above, you can see the landscape that surrounds La Hesperia: cloud forest, river, and the road crossing through it all.

A different perspective of the reserve and the landscape we work to protect every day.

Every Wednesday, we’ll share a small piece of the cloud forest.

A short weekly series to learn more about the species, ecosystems, and natural processes that make La Hesperia so special.

See you next Wednesday for another piece of the forest.

Every Tuesday, we’ll share a little more about the people who have spent time at La Hesperia.

From volunteers and researchers to families and remote workers, each person brings something different to their time in the forest.

This week, we’re featuring one of our former volunteers. She has since left La Hesperia, but we still wanted to share her profile and a little about her experience here.
