🦜 144 Bird Species in Just 5 Days! | Ecuador Birding Highlights 🇪🇨

What an incredible week of birding! We had the pleasure of hosting father and son Christopher H. on a tailor-made birding photography tour from Quito.

Over five unforgettable days, we explored Antisana Condor Observatory, Yanacocha, Guango, Chocó Birds Reserve, and an incredible Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, recording an impressive 144 bird species! 📸🦜

Some of the highlights included the Long-tailed Sylph, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Metallic-green Tanager, and many more spectacular species.

Rufous Potoo with Ecuador Birds Tours 🌿🦉

A few photos from our recent trip to the Misahuallí Amazon Basin in search of the elusive and extremely rare Rufous Potoo.

We visited a beautiful private reserve owned by Byron, a friendly and attentive host who made our visit even more enjoyable. Finding this incredible potoo was truly one of the highlights of our Amazon birding adventure!

Rufous Potoo Extension – A Chance to See One of Ecuador's Most Elusive Birds

The Rufous Potoo (Nyctibius bracteatus) is one of the most elusive and rarely observed birds of the Amazon rainforest—and a very special target birders and wildlife photographers.

While the Rufous Potoo cannot normally be observed during our regular Eastern Slopes Birding Tours around Misahuallí and the nearby Amazon Basin, we can offer a special Rufous Potoo Extension to increase your chances of seeing this extraordinary species.

From Misahuallí, we drive approximately two hours to Sumak Sacha Reserve, followed by an easy mid level 25-minute walk through the rainforest along a well-maintained trail. The bird is known to perch at a strategic location on a branch along a forested slope, allowing excellent opportunities for careful observation and photography when present.

The Rufous Potoo is the smallest potoo species in Ecuador and is famous for its remarkable camouflage, rufous-brown plumage, and large, expressive eyes. Unlike some of the larger potoos that are occasionally easier to locate, this species is exceptionally difficult to find in the dense Amazonian understory and is very rarely encountered by birders. Its nocturnal habits and extraordinary camouflage make every observation a truly memorable experience.

🐍 Anaconda Encounter in the Amazon! 🌿

Wow… what a scary but incredible encounter with an Anaconda! 🐍

Green Anacondas are among the largest snakes in the world, reaching over 5 meters (16 feet) and weighing more than 70 kg (150 lbs). These powerful aquatic predators feed on fish, birds, turtles, caimans, capybaras, and other mammals.

We can often encounter these impressive reptiles during our Amazon Wildlife Tours in Ecuador — another unforgettable experience in the wild! 🇪🇨🌿

🦦 Giant Otters in Yasuní: A Truly Unforgettable Encounter! 🌿

Giant Otters are one of my favorite wildlife species in the Amazon Basin! During our recent Amazon Birding & Photography Tour in Yasuní National Park, we had the incredible opportunity to observe a family group gathering and actively hunting fish to feed their newborns. 🦦🐟

These impressive otters are the largest otter species in the world, reaching up to around 1.8 meters (6 feet) in length. Highly social and incredibly agile in the water, they live in family groups and work together to hunt and raise their young.

What an extraordinary moment to witness in the wild, guided by our private guide Remigio!

We’ve just completed another one of our highlight birding photography tours in Ecuador — an incredible 20-day, 19-night private adventure from the Andes to the Amazon, with an amazing 540+ bird species recorded! 🐦

Along the way, we encountered some of Ecuador’s most iconic and sought-after wildlife, including Andean Condors, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Paradise Tanagers, Giant Otters, Spectacled Bears, Violet-tailed Sylphs, and even a Harpy Eagle with a chick! 🦅🐻🦦🌿

🦅 The Harpy Eagle & Its New Chick: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Amazon Encounter! 🌿

One of the most spectacular highlights of our Birding Amazon Tours is happening right now — a Harpy Eagle with its new chick can be observed in the Amazon! 🦅🐣

The Harpy Eagle is one of the world’s most powerful and iconic forest raptors, and seeing one in the wild is an extraordinary experience. Even more special is observing an adult with a chick, offering a rare glimpse into the breeding behavior and family life of this magnificent species.

🌿 From the Andes to the Chocó: 8 Days of Incredible Birding! 🐦📸

We’ve just wrapped up another one of our highlight birding photography tours in Ecuador! 🇪🇨📸

This time, we spent 8 incredible days exploring the Andes, Western Slope Cloud Forests, the Chocó region, and the lowlands, discovering an amazing diversity of birds and wildlife along the way. 🐦🌿🏔️

Our journey continued to Ecuador’s Eastern Slope in search of the elusive Rufous Potoo… and we found it! 🦉🌿

After a 30-minute walk through the forest, we finally located this incredible species perched in a strategic spot, offering us a fantastic view. To see this specie is now possible in all our tours, previous reservation.

We also encountered other rare and spectacular species, including the Fiery Topaz Hummingbird! 🐦✨

Another unforgettable day of birding and photography in Ecuador.
