The Viljandi Early Music Festival has chosen Ireland as the country of focus for 2027. The 2026 festival paired with India, and Ambassador Sherry participated in the handover ceremony, along with Ambassador of India to the Republic of Estonia, Ashish Kumar Sinha, Viljandi Mayor Jaak Pihlak and Deputy Mayor Silvia Takke.

The handover took place on a boat of Sammuli Puhkeküla, which will also be the site of the receptions next year, providing a unique perspective of the town of Viljandi from the lake that shares its name.

When we asked at the Embassy the first thing that came to mind when talking about George Bernard Shaw, who today would have celebrated his 170th birthday, the Hollywood film “My Fair Lady”, was one of the first works mentioned.

The film won eight Oscars and remains to this day a classic. Shaw didn’t write the film of course, but it is an adaptation of one of his most celebrated works “Pygmalion”, a play for which the writer himself won an Oscar in adapting it for the screen in 1938.

If you want to understand the deep legacy of this Irish writer, 170 years today after he was born, you can see it in how his works live on through adaptations and fresh performances.

Shaw’s works have often been performed in Estonia, and that continues to this day. In October “My Fair Lady will return to the National Opera (check the link in the comments).

Oktoobris on taas võimalik “Minu veetlevat leedit” näha Rahvusooper Estonias (link kommentaaris).

This week Ambassador James Sherry visited Galway with Estonian Ambassador Kairi Künka to mark its pairing with Estonia for

The visit highlighted the strong political, trade, and cultural relations between Ireland and Estonia, and the many connections Estonia shares with Galway in particular.

Galway City Council hosted the ambassadors for at a reception attended by Minister of State Seán Canney, Mayor of Galway Helen Ogbu, Brian Sheridan, Honorary Consul of Estonia in Galway, local leaders, and community representatives.

Ambassadors Sherry and Künka also participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Captain Sheridan, R**t Nõmmoja from Fibenol, and representatives from Colas at the Portofgalway to celebrate the official opening of a new section of roadway paved with an innovative, environmentally friendly bio-based asphalt mixture developed by Estonian company Fibenol.

In 2004 in celebration of Estonia joining the EU, the Estonian city of Tartu gave Galway the gift of a sculpture of Oscar Wilde and Estonian writer Eduard Vilde. Originally created to celebrate the writers and their cultural connections, both cities now share twins of this artwork.

It was a pleasure therefore, for our ambassadors to share a moment on the bench and highlight how these connections have only grown in the years since.

A cultural exchange between Irish and Estonian musicians in 1988 is yet another example of these connections, and to mark the occasion Galway City Museum Ireland, screened ‘Reel to Revolution’, a documentary telling the tale of these events. This was followed by a concert from many of the musicians who joined the visits in 1988.

TG4, Ireland’s Irish-language public broadcaster, shared their work in promoting the Irish language, culture and heritage. TG4 recently recorded in Estonia, and both Ireland and Estonia continue to prioritise the promotion and development of our national languages and heritage.

Thank you to Estonian Ambassador Kairi Künka and the Estonian Embassy in Dublin for coordinating this visit with us, and for the many years of positive and friendly cooperation!

Sel nädalal külastas suursaadik James Sherry koos Eesti suursaadikuga Iirimaal Kairi Künkaga Galwayd, mis Iirimaa ELi eesistumise raames on partner Eestiga.

If the World Cup isn't your cup of tea then don't worry, Irish teams and sports abound this weekend. We'll be cheering on Ireland on Saturday as they face New Zealand in the rugby Nations Championship.

Hurling, an Irish sport that has roots in our myths and legends, the fastest field sport in the world (and one of the most entertaining) is coming home as the All-Ireland final takes place on Sunday afternoon. If you've ever been curious as to what the sport is all about, there's no better showcase than this.
