The noble prophetic ancestry

God decreed that the Prophet (pbuh) be born of the noblest lineage. The Prophet (pbuh) said, “God chose Kinanah from the sons of Isma’il, Quraysh from the tribe of Kinanah, and Banu Hashim from Quraysh and chose me from Banu Hashim” [Muslim].
The Prophet (pbuh) is therefore Muhammad Ibn Abdullah Ibn Abdul Mutallib Ibn Hashim Ibn Abd Manaf Ibn Qusay [al-Bukhari, Manaqeb Al-Ansar, chapter of ‘The Prophet’s Mission’]. His noble lineage goes back to his forefather, Prophet Isma’il, the son of Prophet Ibrahim, the friend of God.

Attachment to homeland

The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) always spoke fondly of his homeland. While on his way to Medina during his migration journey, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on an elevated hill overlooking Mecca and said, “By God, Mecca, of all God’s lands, you are the greatest and most beloved to Him. If I had not been forcibly expelled from you, I would never have left.” The Prophet’s love for his homeland never ceased for it housed the House of God, the Ka’ba, and enjoyed a privileged station in God’s sight.

Paying zakat al-fitr after the Eid prayer or on the same day

Question

I was late in giving zakat al-fitr and only paid it after the Eid prayer. Is it considered a timely fulfillment or is it regarded as a make-up payment? Does it cease to be binding once the day of Eid has passed?

Answer

Zakat al-fitr is a financial obligation that becomes binding upon the legally accountable person. It does not cease to be binding once its time has passed, by analogy to a debt.

Religious Tolerance

“There is no compulsion in (accepting) the religion (of Islam)…”
Tolerance is universally accepted as one of the bases and fundamental principles of our modern world. Yet, Islam has, from its inception, preached tolerance and made it a core value of the religion. Muslims are therefore commanded to promote tolerance as an inherent part of their religion and belief. Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked, “What is iman?” He replied, “Iman is patience and tolerance.”

Islam teaches tolerance on all levels because diversity is the will of God on earth. God says in the Quran, “To you is your religion and to me is mine” (Quran 109: 6) and “There is no compulsion in religion” (Quran 2: 256).

Although Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) suffered great harm at the hands of his people, he always approached the unbelievers of Mecca with tolerance and even refrained from exacting revenge from them after the conquest of Mecca. See less

The waiting period for a void or defective marriage

Question

What is the ruling of Islamic law regarding a woman who marries while still legally married to another man? Is she required to observe a waiting period after divorce from the second marriage?

Answer

If the second husband entered into marriage with this woman while knowing that she was still in a valid marriage with another man, then the second marriage is void (batil), and she is not required to observe a waiting period (‘idda) even if the marriage was consummated. This is because the marriage is void and amounts to adultery, which is not accorded any sanctity in Islamic law.

However, if the second husband entered into the marriage while unaware of her existing marriage, then the second marriage is defective (fasid) and must be dissolved under Islamic law. In such a case, the woman must observe a waiting period if the marriage was consummated, in order to protect the husband’s right to establish paternity of his child, given his ignorance of her prior marriage.
