Strengthening Confidence in Laboratory Results Across Africa

Accurate and reliable laboratory results are essential for protecting consumers, supporting industry, improving healthcare and facilitating trade.

The African Accreditation Cooperation (AFRAC) today participated in a virtual training on ISO/IEC 17043:2023 under the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Quality Infrastructure (QI) Programme for Africa, bringing together Accreditation Bodies, laboratories, regulators, National Focal Points and other quality infrastructure stakeholders from across Africa.

Opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Walter Ongeti, CEO of the Kenya Accreditation Service, on behalf of the AFRAC Chairperson, Dr. Celestine Okanya. He highlighted the critical role of proficiency testing in demonstrating laboratory competence and strengthening confidence in accreditation.

By strengthening regional capacity in proficiency testing, Africa is enhancing the reliability of laboratory results, supporting regulatory confidence, facilitating trade and protecting consumers.

A Stronger Africa Begins with Stronger Accreditation Systems

Across Africa, strong national Accreditation Bodies are helping build confidence in testing, inspection, certification and other conformity assessment services. They are essential for protecting consumers, supporting industries, facilitating trade and strengthening national quality infrastructure.

The African Accreditation Cooperation (AFRAC) joined stakeholders during the ACP Quality Infrastructure Programme Sensitization Webinar on establishing Accreditation Bodies across Africa, which focused on supporting countries that are yet to establish national accreditation systems.

Opening the webinar on behalf of the Chairperson of AFRAC Mr. Celestine Okanya, Kenya Accreditation Service CEO Dr. Walter Ongeti reaffirmed AFRAC's commitment to supporting Member States through collaboration, technical cooperation, peer learning and capacity building as they develop internationally recognized accreditation systems.

AFRAC commends the ACP Quality Infrastructure Programme, UNIDO and ARSO for bringing together partners committed to strengthening quality infrastructure across Africa.

Together, we are building a more connected, competitive and trusted Africa through accreditation.

Working together for a successful transition to the revised ISO/IEC 17020!

Representatives from the AFRAC Technical Committee (TC) Inspection Subcommittee met to consolidate Africa's response to the Global ACI TC2 survey on the transition to the revised ISO/IEC 17020 standard.

The meeting reinforced AFRAC's commitment to regional collaboration, knowledge sharing and harmonised implementation of international accreditation requirements. By working together, AFRAC continues to support Member Accreditation Bodies and accredited inspection bodies across Africa in preparing for a smooth and effective transition.

Strengthening Communication for Accreditation in Africa

More than 30 participants from Accreditation Bodies (ABs) and stakeholder organizations across Africa recently came together for the AFRAC Marketing and Communications Committee (MCC) virtual workshop on strengthening communication for accreditation.

The workshop explored how strategic communication can enhance awareness of accreditation and demonstrate its role in facilitating trade, protecting consumers, strengthening regulatory confidence, and supporting sustainable development.

Participants also gained practical insights into leveraging digital and social media to amplify the impact of accreditation. The sessions were facilitated by Karla Sanchez, Administration & Marketing Coordinator, Global ACI, and Brendon Moo, Chairperson of the Global ACI Communications Committee, who shared international best practices on strategic communication, stakeholder engagement, and effective storytelling.

The workshop provided an excellent platform for learning, exchanging experiences, and strengthening the communication capacity of AFRAC members and stakeholders as they continue to promote the value of accreditation across Africa.

Strengthening Communication for Accreditation in Africa

Effective communication is essential in raising awareness of accreditation and demonstrating its value in supporting trade, consumer protection, regulatory confidence, and sustainable development.

On Tuesday, 30th June 2026, the AFRAC Marketing and Communications Committee (MCC) will convene a virtual workshop from 10:00 to 14:00 (SAST).

The workshop will be facilitated by Karla Sanchez, Administration & Marketing Coordinator, Global ACI, and Brendon Moo, Chairperson of the Global ACI Communications Committee. Participants will gain insights into effective communication strategies, stakeholder engagement, and international best practices in promoting accreditation.

AFRAC remains committed to strengthening the capacity of its members and enhancing the visibility and impact of accreditation across the continent.
