This is more than an award. It is the recognition of nearly 20 years of partnership and dedication.
The 2025 JICA President’s Award has been presented to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) Project and its strategic public relations team.
This recognition celebrates a journey that began in 2006, when the Loan Agreement for the museum was signed and even before. Since then, the project has grown through many milestones—from the international architectural competition and the relocation of the Ramses II statue to the construction of the museum itself.
As the project evolved, Japan’s cooperation also expanded beyond construction. Japanese experts in conservation, archaeology, and museum management worked side by side with Egyptian conservators and curators, sharing knowledge through training, conservation, artifacts transportation relocation, exhibition preparation, and ultimately, the opening of the museum.
Over nearly two decades, the project has overcome political transitions, , the COVID-19 pandemic, and many unexpected challenges and delays. Behind this achievement are engineers, architects, conservators, curators, government counterparts, consultants, workers, JICA staff, national staff, and countless others whose dedication made this journey possible.
This recognition is especially meaningful for our colleagues Mayada and Dina, whose commitment to the GEM Project has spanned nearly twenty years. Yet they would be the first to say that this award belongs to everyone who has contributed along the way. Thanks Mayada, Dina, and Egypt Office team involved; Satoru, Riham, and Tomomi, whose dedication and contributions have been instrumental to the success of the GEM and its visibility.
The Grand Egyptian Museum is not only a symbol of Egypt’s extraordinary heritage, but also a testament to what long-term partnership, mutual trust, and shared commitment between Egypt and Japan can achieve.
Congratulations to everyone who has been part of this remarkable journey.

JICA and Banque Misr Review Impact of Cooperation for Supporting SMEs

JICA held a meeting with Banque Misr to discuss the impact of the JICA loan for SMEs support. As part of JICA’s Private Sector Investment Fund (PSIF) scheme, JICA and Banque Misr signed a loan agreement in March 2021, co-financed with SMBC (Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation) to support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises which are a critical engine for inclusive economic growth and job creation in Egypt. As the loan repayment came to an end in May 2026, the meeting provided an opportunity to jointly assess the loan’s development impact and lessons learned.

The discussions highlighted how JICA’s long term, development oriented financing combined with Banque Misr’s wide outreach and deep understanding of the local market has successfully translated into real and measurable benefits for 584 beneficiary SMEs across various sectors, 38% of which are female-owned SMEs.

To further demonstrate this impact, JICA and Banque Misr teams visited one of the benefiting SMEs of this loan. The visit further assured the impact of access to finance on SMEs in terms of expansion and new economic opportunities. The SME, a copper artifacts manufacturing workshop, emphasized the value of Banque Misr’s speedy and efficient lending process, along with close client engagement as key factors in supporting SMEs sustainability and growth.

JICA is committed to private sector development in Egypt, and has strong ongoing support under its PSIF scheme. In addition to support to SMEs, this scheme also supports the advancement of the private sector in the field of Renewable Energy through projects such as the Kom Ombo Solar Power Plant , and the Ras Ghareb Wind Power Plant.

🇪🇬🇯🇵 A high-level Egyptian and Japanese delegation visited the Egyptian-Japanese KOSEN (EJ-KOSEN) College, highlighting its role as a pioneering model of technological education in Egypt and the Arab region.

👏 The delegation praised students’ outstanding performances, innovative projects, and practical skills in robotics, AI, software, and engineering, demonstrating the success of the KOSEN approach in nurturing future innovators.

من التمويل إلى الميدان: جايكا تتابع أعمال إنشاء مزرعة رياح رأس غارب

قام فريق جايكا من مكتب طوكيو ومكتب مصر بزيارة مشروع مزرعة رياح رأس غارب بقدرة 200 ميجاوات، والذي يتشارك في ملكيته كل من إنفينيتي باور ومصدر. وقد حصل المشروع على تمويل استثمارات القطاع الخاص من جايكا، كما يشارك في تمويله كل من البنك الأوروبي لإعادة الإعمار والتنمية (الشريك التنموي الرئيسي)، وبروباركو (Proparco)، وصندوق المناخ الأخضر.

تُعد مزرعة الرياح جزءًا من محور الطاقة ضمن برنامج "نُوَفِّي" (NWFE، محور العلاقة بين الطاقة والغذاء والماء)، الذي يهدف إلى الإسراع من أجندة مصر المناخية، كما ستسهم في تحقيق نسبة 42% من الطاقة المتجددة في مزيج الطاقة في مصر بحلول عام 2030، بما يتماشى مع استراتيجية الطاقة المستدامة المتكاملة.

يشمل المشروع إنشاء وتشغيل مزرعة رياح بقدرة 200 ميجاوات، بالإضافة إلى خطوط نقل ومحطات فرعية. حالياً بدأت أعمال الأساسات الخاصة بتركيب توربينات الرياح، ومن المخطط الانتهاء من المشروع بنهاية عام 2027.

تدعم جايكا قطاع الطاقة في مصر منذ سنوات طويلة، بما في ذلك تعزيز الطاقة المتجددة وكفاءة الطاقة.
From Finance to Field: JICA follows Construction of Ras Ghareb Wind Farm

JICA HQ and Egypt Office teams visited 200 MW Ras Ghareb Wind Farm jointly owned by Infinity Power and Masdar. The wind farm received JICA Private Sector Investment Finance (PSIF), and is co-financed by EBRD (as principal development partner), PROPARCO and the Green Climate Fund.
This wind farm is part of the Energy pillar of the NWFE Program (Nexus of Water, Food and Energy), which aims to accelerate Egypt's climate agenda, and will contribute to the target of achieving 42% of renewables in Egypt's energy mix by 2030, in line with the Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy.
The project involves the construction and operation of a 200MW wind farm, transmission lines and substation facilities. Currently, it is in the stage of laying the foundations for the installation of wind turbines and is planned to be completed towards the end of 2027.
JICA has been supporting the energy sector in Egypt over long years including promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

A key milestone achieved 🎉— Arrival at the Port of Alexandria on 5 May

A major milestone has been reached in the JICA-supported Cairo Metro Line 4 Project with the arrival of the first metro train cars at the Port of Alexandria on 5 May.
The train cars were manufactured in Japan and transported to Egypt.

This marks the transition from manufacturing and international shipment to the next phase of on-site construction and system preparation, reflecting strong coordination among all parties involved.

The Cairo Metro Line 4 Project introduces Japanese railway technology to help improve urban mobility in Greater Cairo, reducing congestion while enhancing safety, reliability, and passenger comfort. Following the arrival at the port, the train parts will be transported to the workshop area for the line 4 (over an area of 75 feddans) to be assembled, tested and be ready for preparation for operation in the near future.
From Japan to Egypt, this milestone represents steady progress in Japan–Egypt cooperation and brings sustainable urban transportation one step closer to reality.
