The GIS Expert will provide technical leadership across the planning,
design, implementation, and quality assurance of GIS solutions supporting complex project requirements. The position combines spatial data management, application development, database architecture, automation, analytical modeling, and technical troubleshooting within an integrated digital environment.
The role will help project teams convert field information and geographic datasets into reliable maps, spatial models, dashboards, databases, and analytical outputs. Strong GIS governance and data quality controls will support more accurate planning, engineering analysis, reporting, and decision-making across project activities.
Key Responsibilities
Develop detailed work plans, schedules, procedures, and technical approaches for GIS project assignments.
Support definition of project scope, delivery requirements, resource needs, and GIS workflows.
Prepare budget estimates and staffing requirements for assigned GIS activities.
Evaluate hardware, software, licensing, storage, and infrastructure requirements for GIS implementation.
Recommend appropriate GIS technology based on project complexity, user needs, and data volumes.
Coordinate collection of field data required for spatial analysis and mapping.
Review available datasets for relevance, reliability, completeness, and suitability for project use.
Assess geographic data accuracy, precision, coordinate systems, and metadata quality.
Design GIS databases, spatial data structures, analytical workflows, and geoprocessing procedures.
Develop or oversee development of GIS applications tailored to specific project requirements.
Integrate GIS software, hardware, databases, field information, and non-spatial datasets.
Design automation processes that improve efficiency of recurring GIS tasks.
Modify application code and scripts where required to support customized GIS workflows.
Develop repeatable processes for data conversion, spatial analysis, mapping, and reporting.
Apply spatial analysis techniques including interpolation, modeling, proximity analysis, overlays, and trend identification.
Produce analytical outputs that illustrate geographic patterns, relationships, risks, and opportunities.
Combine GIS information with engineering, planning, environmental, infrastructure, or project management data where appropriate.
Develop solutions for integrating non-GIS databases with spatial applications.
Troubleshoot complex GIS software, hardware, database, and integration issues.
Develop practical workarounds when standard system functions do not meet project needs.
Monitor GIS system performance and identify opportunities for technical improvement.
Perform quality assurance reviews on GIS databases, spatial processing, mapping outputs, and project deliverables.
Verify work completed by GIS analysts, technicians, and supporting team members.
Maintain consistent standards for data structure, symbology, naming conventions, metadata, and map production.
Evaluate commercial GIS platforms and emerging tools for potential project application.
Design and develop advanced GIS applications for internal use and client deliverables.
Produce or supervise preparation of digital maps, spatial databases, reports, graphics, and hardcopy products.
Ensure client deliverables meet agreed technical, cartographic, and presentation requirements.
Maintain organized records of GIS data sources, transformations, processing methods, and analytical assumptions.
Support project reporting with accurate spatial information and technical interpretation.
Provide technical advice to project teams regarding appropriate GIS methods and data sources.
Support business development activities where GIS capability, mapping, or spatial analysis is required.
Mentor GIS personnel and support development of consistent technical practices across the team.
