"It turns out that digital devices and software are finely tuned to train us to pay attention to them, no matter what else we should be doing. The mechanism, borne out by recent neuroscience studies, is something like this:

New information creates a rush of dopamine to the brain, a neurotransmitter that makes you feel good.
The promise of new information compels your brain to seek out that dopamine rush.
With fMRIs, you can see the brain’s pleasure centres light up with activity when new emails arrive.

So, every new email you get gives you a little flood of dopamine. Every little flood of dopamine reinforces your brain’s memory that checking email gives a flood of dopamine. And our brains are programmed to seek out things that will give us little floods of dopamine. Further, these patterns of behaviour start creating neural pathways, so that they become unconscious habits: Work on something important, brain itch, check email, dopamine, refresh, dopamine, check Twitter, dopamine, back to work. Over and over, and each time the habit becomes more ingrained in the actual structures of our brains.

How can books compete?"

Or, Can books save us from what digital does to our brains?

When the Day of Judgment dawns and people, great and small, come marching in to receive their heavenly rewards,
the Almighty will gaze upon the mere bookworms and say to Peter,
“Look, these need no reward. We have nothing to give them.
They have loved reading.”
- Virginia Woolf

The Secrets of Pilgrimage (Kitab Asrar al-Hajj)
by Imam al-Ghazali
Translated by Ibrahim Umar

This book is the 7th book (chapter) of the first quartet (Acts of Worship; Rubʿ al-ʿibadāt) of the Ihya. On the first part after stating all the merit from al-Quran and Hadith, Imam al-Ghazali wrote about Hajj’s story of Companions and great people. He also wrote several commentary on those phrases or stories. On the second part, Imam al-Ghazali put a tremendous effort in writing the sequence of all the obligations and sunnah in term of madhab Shafie. The details of this sequence from the early step one should take while finding provision, company, transports etc for the Hajj. And with each action there is prayer that accompanied them, but no Arabic text is provided along with it. The third part is where the meaning of the external action being unveil. Followed by the step on how to be sincere in each and every step – which also the hardest part but a very good reminder.

Louis (IX of France, 7th crusade) took Damietta in the Nile delta in June 1249 with an army of about 20,000 men. The Egyptian army withdrew further up the river.

Louis started to march on Cairo in November and should have gained an advantage from the death of the last Ayyubid sultan, al-Salih.

Despite chaos in Cairo during which the sultan’s widow, Shaggar ad Durr, took control Louis and the Templars were roundly defeated by the Mamluk Bahirya commander Baybars at al-MANSOURAH (al-Mansur).

Louis refused to fall back to Damietta and his troops starved, before a belated retreat during which he was captured in March 1250.

James Waterson introduces the slave warriors of medieval Islam who overthrew their masters, defeated the Mongols and the Crusaders and established a dynasty that lasted three hundred years.
