On Biodiversity Day, we are reminded that protecting the Mediterranean means acting where pressures are felt most: in its seagrass meadows, coastal wetlands, lagoons, island habitats and biodiversity hotspots.

📺 Project MIRAMAR, stemming from the UfM-labelled Plastic Busters Initiative, is dedicated to tackling marine litter across our sea through monitoring, prevention and mitigation, while supporting healthier and more resilient ecosystems.

Over 33 months, the project brings together efforts from across the Mediterranean basin to address long-term environmental challenges through coordinated and transnational action. With 8 partners and 14 associated partners operating across nine pilot areas, MIRAMAR will develop and test innovative, science-based solutions to mitigate and restore ecosystems impacted by cumulative environmental stressors.

From the seagrass meadows of Secche della Meloria and the Bay of Pollença, to the wetlands of Amvrakikos, the Vjosa River Delta, the Western Istria Coast, Lavezzi Island, the Aeolian Islands, Capo Peloro Lagoon, and coastal habitats across Tuscany, these pilot areas reflect both the richness and vulnerability of Mediterranean biodiversity.

At the UfM Digital Transformation Conference in Tallinn in 2019, several countries expressed interest in learning from Estonia’s e-government experience. What followed was a concrete example of peer learning: Estonian officials travelled to Algeria, Palestine and Mauritania, with support from GIZ and facilitation by the UfM.

Starting tomorrow, the 5th UfM Digital Transformation Conference: Digital Skills and e-Governance Solutions will take place in Antalya, Türkiye, focusing on digital skills and e-governance solutions that can be replicated and scaled across the region.

The Mediterranean is one of the world’s most vulnerable regions to disasters, from wildfires and floods to earthquakes.

As these risks grow, so does the need for stronger cooperation.

The UfM has adopted the 2030 Action Plan on Civil Protection and Disaster Risk Management, a regional roadmap to help countries work together to better prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters.

The plan focuses on five key areas:
👉🏿Raising awareness and encouraging volunteer engagement
👉🏾Strengthening preparedness and early warning systems
👉🏽Improving cross-border disaster response
👉🏼Reinforcing coordination and partnerships
👉🏻Learning and adapting through continuous evaluation

Swipe through the carousel to explore how these priorities translate into action.

Research can create jobs.
Skills can drive innovation.
Ideas can become businesses.

Since 2019, the UfM Innovation–Employability Initiative has worked to connect higher education, research and labour market needs across the Mediterranean.

As part of this initiative, five publications have been developed on green skills, vocational pathways, research commercialisation and academia–business collaboration.
