We are happy to present our Pontevedra travel guide for Local Secrets.
Pontevedra Province is Galicia’s coastal playground, green, salty, and quietly proud, where villages, estuaries, and small cities feel closely tied to the sea.
It has a calm personality, with slow mornings, lively markets, and evenings that stretch around good food and conversation.
The main reason to visit is to enjoy an Atlantic landscape shaped by tradition and everyday beauty.
Late spring, from May to June, and early fall, September to October, usually bring the best balance of mild weather and fewer crowds.
Average annual temperature is about 14°C / 57°F, although the coast can feel cooler and inland valleys can run warmer.
Travelers come for beaches and islands, but also for food culture, wine country, and a sense of place that still feels local.
Many visitors are looking for authenticity, nature, and easy-to-reach escapes that do not require rushing.
It’s also a province where short distances unlock totally different moods.
Bring a light rain layer.
Know before you go.
Pontevedra Province is Spain’s Rías Baixas heartland, special because Atlantic inlets shape daily life, from fishing towns to vineyard hills.
For the best mix of weather and atmosphere, travel in May to June or September, however July and August are busier.
Two to three days fits a highlights loop, while a week lets you add islands and slower meals. Base yourself in Vigo for transport and nightlife, or in Pontevedra city for a relaxed, walkable center. Use a car for flexibility, also combine buses and trains for main towns.
Lunch is usually 2–4, dinner 9–11. Budget is mid-range, keep valuables close in crowded spots, and pack non-slip shoes because wet stone streets can be slick.

Exploring Authentic Pontevedra
Village Bakery Vilagarcia de Arousa
Village Bakery – Breakfast as a special experience, the artisanal surprise that locals and travelers fall in love with.
Top things to do.
In Pontevedra Province, couples often focus on coastal sunsets and wine tastings, families prioritize beaches and short ferry rides, and solo travelers can go deep with old towns and long coastal walks. With one day, choose one zone, either Vigo plus a viewpoints loop, or Pontevedra plus a seaside village, so you cut transit.
For 2–3 days, group by Ría de Vigo, Ría de Pontevedra, and O Salnés, because of that you spend more time exploring than driving. In summer, book island ferries early, from about €20–€30 round trip, and go in the morning for calmer seas.
On rainy days, swap to museums, markets, and thermal stops, meanwhile for kids, pick flat promenades and short boat rides.
Must try local flavours.
Start with pulpo a feira, tender octopus with paprika and olive oil, best at lunch when markets are busiest. Add empanada gallega, a savory pie sold by the slice, perfect for mid-morning.
Try mariscos like mussels or clams for dinner, and pimientos de Padrón as a shared snack, some bite back. Sip Albariño, the local white wine, and finish with tarta de Santiago after 5 pm with coffee. Order like a local, “Un pulpo á feira, por favor,” and ask “¿Está recién hecho?” Street bites run €3–€8, seafood plates €15–€35. For veg or gluten-free, go for grilled peppers, tortillas, and rice dishes, and choose sparkling water instead of alcohol.
Authentic, high quality local favourites.
In Pontevedra Province, the best local favourites are marisquerías, tapas bars, village taverns, seafood markets, and small wineries.
A “local favourite” means regulars return often, because the place stays consistent, not because it is famous online.
Look for handwritten menus, seasonal seafood, and staff who guide you without pushing. Order the catch of the day, a simple rice with seafood, or a glass of Albariño from the house.
O Salnés suits food and wine lovers, while the Vigo waterfront works for quick bites before ferries. Go at 1:30 for lunch or 8:30 for early dinner. Expect € tapas, €€ seafood, €€€ tasting menus.
Ask about reservations on weekends, and note some traditional spots have steps and tight entrances.
