Tracy and I have travelled together for years as you know, and if there’s one thing we’ve realised, it’s that we’re not very good at doing “normal” holidays.
We don’t tend to book the big all-inclusive resort where every meal is planned and every day looks much the same. Instead, we seem to gravitate towards little apartments, family-run guesthouses and places where Google Maps occasionally gives up and says, “You’re on your own kids.”
Some people collect souvenirs. We seem to collect people.
This week in Bosnia, we stayed with our host, Zvone. His Dad refused to give up his land during the communist era, standing his ground so his family could keep their little piece of coastline. Years later, that same land has become the place where visitors like us arrive from all over the world, well, mostly Bosnia (but his world!).
Those are the stories we will remember. Not just the views or the food, but the conversations. The history. The Bosnian coffee shared on a terrace (which is like Turkish coffee but you boil the water first, then add the coffee then boil it again for the perfect foam or kajmak!)
There’s something quite special about leaving somewhere feeling as though you’ve made a friend rather than simply checked out of accommodation.
In fact, one of our favourite thoughts is that perhaps one day soon we will meet some of these people again and host them at Casa Quireza (Take 2!) in our own home in Scotland.
The world feels much smaller when you’ve made genuine connections.
