Enric Miralles (1955–2000)

There are architects who design buildings. And there are architects who redesign the very idea of what a building can be. Enric Miralles belonged to the latter kind.

Few architects have managed, as he did, to turn an existing structure into a dialogue between past, present and imagination. Barcelona’s Santa Caterina Market is perhaps the most recognisable example: rather than reconstruct the historic building or erase it, Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue preserved the façades, revealed the remains of the medieval convent uncovered during construction, and placed above it all a vast, undulating, colourful roof — some 325,000 glazed ceramic tiles in 67 shades, evoking the colours of the fruit and vegetables sold in the market below.

This is not decoration. It is a building that tells a story about the city itself.

Miralles did not live to see the project completed. He died in 2000, aged just 45, five years before the renewed market opened. Benedetta Tagliabue completed the work, courageously preserving their shared vision.

To my mind, Miralles was one of the most original and poetic architects of the late twentieth century. In a world where many were content to repeat an already familiar language, he invented a new grammar. His drawings looked like thought in motion, and his buildings refused to submit to predictable geometry or rigid order.

His early death was an immense loss to architecture. It is hard not to wonder what further works he might have given the world had he lived another thirty years. Only rarely does an architect appear who can be, at once, an intellectual, a poet and a builder. Enric Miralles was one of them.
