EUNAVFOR Operation ATALANTA is the first naval operation of the EU Common Security and Defense Policy. As part of the EU Integrated Approach to the Horn of Africa, since 2008 ATALANTA supports and cooperates with the Coastal States in the common effort for peace, stability and maritime security.

ATALANTA provides maritime security monitoring from the sky with her air asset.

Do you know how this capability supports vessels in the area?

🔎 After a thorough planning phase, the crew takes off from Djibouti bound for the Somali coast. Pilots guide the aircraft, while supervisors coordinated radar objectives and analysts review archived images of vessels potentially linked to piracy and active cases

Upon reaching the patrol area, the crew enters a phase of silence to maintain full concentration. The tactical supervisor ensures coordination with ships, while operators examined radar signals using the powerful FLIR cameras. Each radar echo has to be identified—whether a registered vessel, an illegal fishing boat, a fast skiff, or even a large marine animal.

Once the mission is accomplished, the crew returns to base in Djibouti, sending the command center a full report with imagery.
