MPDA BarcelonaTech

MPDA BarcelonaTech Master's degree in Parametric Design in Architecture at UPC school, Barcelona.

MPDA is oriented to the integration of computational tools and digital manufacturing technology in lightweight building systems and architectural design. http://coda-office.com/master

The Master 'Parametric Design in Architecture' is a unique opportunity to critically review computational design t

owards a more challenging and self-demanding commitment to environmental constraints. The architectural project is a complex process that should allow linking knowledge management with design in an operative way. We call parameters to all categories of information that affect decision-making in the development of a project. This is the goal of parametric architecture: go beyond geometry and form to design a system with all variables / categories involved in the process. This is the potential of current software tools: Grasshopper, Rhinoceros, Revit, Dynamo, etc; which allow to change the design process, transforming architects from builders of models to builders of systems. Our aim is to design and discover novel form-finding strategies through the methodological integration of forces, matter and processes. The Master degree is taught in the Metropolitan School of Architecture offering a residence of international students as well as equipment and facilities of the latest technology necessary for this training. Its model workshop, digital laboratories and technology centre CRITT, in addition to collaboration with the Barcelona Fab Ateneus Network, allow students to explore all possibilities in parametric design techniques.

ALP timber gridshell in use
Very happy with the fruitful collaboration with in the creation of a timber gridshell serving as stage for a canopy.
Even happier to see it in use!

Very thankful to

Anna Bauer for Kiwi3d, team and always thankful to Daniel Piker for Kangaroo2,
for the support. Also Many thanks to and Miquel Benedicto for their strength and support.

The students followed a program of continuous reviews by international experts on structural design, wood construction, computational geometry and membrane patterning. The students solved all the design, numerical fabrication and construction processes themselves. It was built at the Stage phase of the blended learning master mode. MPDA program provides the computational design framework for the creation and optimization of timber lightweight structures with a low ecological footprint.

The "Zollinger" open classroom built at the CanCuní, is a lightweight gridshell of short handleable pieces of birch plywood for hosting open-air lectures. The system is loosely based on the traditional Zollinger system which consists of the reciprocal transfer of loads in a short beam system. Covering doubly curved surfaces with this system is possible without the need for long and thick beams and complex manufacturing joints, reducing the overall cost, time and weight of the whole structure by using stiff metal plates which is the scope of the research. The challenge is to design and calibrate a joint stiff enough to prevent the need of a cost increasing and time consuming bracing system. The whole system packs in a van and is manufactured with standard cnc and laser machinery.

The students of the master MPDA Master in Parametric Design in Architecture followed a program of continuous reviews by international experts on structural design, wood construction, computational geometry and membrane patterning. The students solved all the design, structural modelling of the joints and the structural analysis of the whole structure, the numerical fabrication and construction processes themselves. It was built at the Stage phase in June 2021 in Banyoles, Girona Spain.
