Shortly before the European Day of Megalithic Culture and while I was reading the 800-page bible "Origin and Development of Megalithism in Western Europe" at the Musée des Tumulus de Bougon whose article dedicated to the megaliths of Belgium (p90) mentions the release by Wallonie.be of the volumes of the monograph relating to the "megalithic field of Wéris" (available in https://www.librairie-archeologique.com/index.html?produit=28356 and https://www.librairie-archeologique.com/index.html?produit=38572 from Éditions Faton and lalibrairie.com, https://spw. academia.edu/ChristianFr%C3%A9butte), the Agence wallonne du Patrimoine chaired by Valérie De Bue announced the discovery of seven new menhirs at the Champ de la Longue Pierre, where three other menhirs had already been uncovered during previous excavations, bringing the total number of menhirs known to date around the Maison des Mégalithes de Wéris to 24. These monoliths weigh between 1.3 tons and 9.2 tons. They were knocked down in condemnation trenches between the 16th and 17th centuries.
Christian Frébutte, the archaeologist in charge of the excavations, was keen to stress the importance of this discovery: "The menhirs are perfectly aligned. Here we have a group of stones and then an interruption for a few dozen metres. Then we discovered another group of stones that are placed in the same alignment": https://www.rtbf.be/embed/m?id=3024069&fbclid=IwAR3Z2Kp_hPR7pw7l-xbPsXtK4By4tpiV2JcIdMzwVa4elpaXIzyZCSP2NRc of RTBF Info / RTBF
These menhirs are part of the alignments related to the dolmens of Wéris and Oppagne, which extend over nearly 8 km, between Oppagne and Ozo. These seven menhirs are added to the seventeen already listed and everything indicates that it is far from over for Durbuy tourisme in Belgian Tourist Office Wallonia ... A four-pronged project is planned with the FAW&B - Fédération des Archéologues de Wallonie et de Bruxelles asbl for the megalithic field: excavations, geophysical prospecting, restoration of the site and mediation towards the public of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles/Officiel.
The Maison des Mégalithes will participate in the elaboration of panels on the megalithic site in collaboration with AwAP and the Famenne-Ardenne Unesco Global Geopark: https://www.megalithes-weris.be/news-afficher.php?a=52
