Shortly before the European Day of Megalithic Culture and while I was reading the 800-page bible "Origin and Development of Megalithism in Western Europe" at the Musée des Tumulus de Bougon whose article dedicated to the megaliths of Belgium (p90) mentions the release by Wallonie.be of the volumes of the monograph relating to the "megalithic field of Wéris" (available in https://www.librairie-archeologique.com/index.html?produit=28356 and https://www.librairie-archeologique.com/index.html?produit=38572 from Éditions Faton and lalibrairie.com, https://spw. academia.edu/ChristianFr%C3%A9butte), the Agence wallonne du Patrimoine chaired by Valérie De Bue announced the discovery of seven new menhirs at the Champ de la Longue Pierre, where three other menhirs had already been uncovered during previous excavations, bringing the total number of menhirs known to date around the Maison des Mégalithes de Wéris to 24. These monoliths weigh between 1.3 tons and 9.2 tons. They were knocked down in condemnation trenches between the 16th and 17th centuries.
Christian Frébutte, the archaeologist in charge of the excavations, was keen to stress the importance of this discovery: "The menhirs are perfectly aligned. Here we have a group of stones and then an interruption for a few dozen metres. Then we discovered another group of stones that are placed in the same alignment": https://www.rtbf.be/embed/m?id=3024069&fbclid=IwAR3Z2Kp_hPR7pw7l-xbPsXtK4By4tpiV2JcIdMzwVa4elpaXIzyZCSP2NRc of RTBF Info / RTBF
These menhirs are part of the alignments related to the dolmens of Wéris and Oppagne, which extend over nearly 8 km, between Oppagne and Ozo. These seven menhirs are added to the seventeen already listed and everything indicates that it is far from over for Durbuy tourisme in Belgian Tourist Office Wallonia ... A four-pronged project is planned with the FAW&B - Fédération des Archéologues de Wallonie et de Bruxelles asbl for the megalithic field: excavations, geophysical prospecting, restoration of the site and mediation towards the public of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles/Officiel.
The Maison des Mégalithes will participate in the elaboration of panels on the megalithic site in collaboration with AwAP and the Famenne-Ardenne Unesco Global Geopark: https://www.megalithes-weris.be/news-afficher.php?a=52

We have been strengthened in the last year with the inclusion of four new members from southern Europe : https://megalithicroutes.eu/members
Until November 2021, the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta / Regione Valle d'Aosta (Italy), Les Amis de Filitosa - Le site préhistorique de la Corse (Corsica), the Comarca of Sobrarbe / Turismo de Sobrarbe / Cultura Sobrarbe / Geoparque Mundial Unesco Sobrarbe-Pirineos (Spain), Seró Espai Transmissor (Spain) and ADT Campoo - Los Valles (Spain) were part of it.
However, with the recent incorporation of four new megalithic territories from Portugal, Spain and Turkey, the presence of members from Southern Europe has notably increased.
The Axencia Turismo de Galicia represents a large territory located in the northwest of Spain, with hundreds of megalithic monuments of different typologies, such as the impressive Dolmen de Dombate (Cabana de Bergantiños), Dolmen Forno dos Mouros (Toques) or Dolmen de Hospital de Montouto (A Fonsagrada).
A little further south, in the centre of Portugal, the Associação de Estudos do Alto Tejo promotes the revitalisation of the megalithic heritage of the Intermunicipal Community of Beira Baixa (CIMBB), in the heart of the Geopark Naturtejo, Geoparque Mundial da UNESCO, with megaliths such as the dolmen do Carapito (Urgueira), the dolmen of Cão do Ribeiro (Proença-a-Nova) or the dolmen Cabeço d’Ante (Vila Velha de Ródão).
Ayuntamiento de Trigueros Huelva, in Andalusia, has also joined the route as a new member, with its spectacular Dolmen de Soto de Trigueros, one of the most impressive Neolithic monuments in the south of Europe : VIDEO from Canal Andalucía Turismo in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcKqNCUarmc&list=PLMT5eegD7CvFlUiHHj6lNw5hGEq4DGcfb&index=7.
On the other hand, the geographical and cultural framework of this European route has been significantly extended with the incorporation of Göbeklitepe, Sanliurfa Tourist Development (Turkey) with one of the oldest megalithic complexes known to date, built six thousand years before the Stonehenge monument. Göbekli Tepe was also listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site in 2018, because it is worldwide the oldest known megalithic architecture, starting already in mesolithic times.
These new additions make the European Route of Megalithic Culture a unique tool to enjoy some of the oldest monuments in Europe, through itineraries that cross some of the most breathtaking cultural landscapes of our continent and remind us of our common past : https://megalithicroutes.eu/growing-presence-of-southern-europe-on-the-european-route-of-megalithic-culture
