At in Limassol, our Executive Director Maja Markovčić Kostelac joined a high-level panel on Maritime Security Cooperation in the EU, alongside Charlina Vitcheva (DG MARE), Dr Susan Steele (European Fisheries Control Agency - EFCA), Aija Kalnaja (Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency), the Chairs of the European and Mediterranean Coast Guard Functions Forums, and Cyprus JRCC.

Key questions on the table:
🔹 How EU agencies and Member States deliver a coordinated response to maritime threats
🔹 The role of the coast guard fora in enhancing information sharing and joint operations
🔹 How frontline Member States can make better use of European instruments and agency support
🔹 Whether the EU needs to recalibrate its maritime security posture as pressure grows on trade routes, energy infrastructure and critical undersea cables

The discussions underlined the value of the European cooperation on coast guard functions framework in supporting Member States across the complex, often overlapping challenges of the maritime security landscape.

“There’s no doubt that coast guard cooperation benefits every single citizen in Europe.” 🌊🇪🇺

At , our Executive Director highlighted how far European coast guard cooperation has come over the past years, from limited coordination to a strong operational framework between EU agencies and Member States.

In today’s geopolitical context, this cooperation matters more than ever. By working together, we mobilise expertise, share knowledge, and carry out joint operations and exercises at sea, pooling capabilities across the European maritime community.

At EFCA, cooperation with other EU actors is key. Through close collaboration with the European Maritime Safety Agency and Frontex , we strengthen our operational capacity: combining complementary tools and expertise, from aerial surveillance to satellite-based maritime awareness. 🛰️🚁

At the same time, coast guard authorities enhance coordination through continuous information exchange via dedicated platforms supporting real-time operations.

Much work still lies ahead, but the progress achieved by EU agencies and Member States clearly demonstrates the added value of European cooperation in addressing maritime challenges. ⚓

The second online awareness session on the European Cooperation on Coast Guard Functions Online Platform brought together representatives from EMSA, Frontex, and EU Member States to explore the latest developments and growing role of the platform in supporting European coast guard functions cooperation.

The session showcased the upgraded platform’s functionalities, visibility and added value, alongside the Practical Handbook, the ongoing capacity-building and training activities - like the Exchange Programme and SQFCGF-, as well as interagency cooperation activities.

Discussions also addressed future steps and the importance of further promoting the platform across the European coast guard functions community to fully unlock its potential.

The very positive feedback from participants highlighted the increasing interest in the platform and its value as a central hub for knowledge and information sharing, training opportunities, best practices and cross-border and cross-sector cooperation among coast guard function authorities in Europe.
