The Mission and also facilitates Malawi’s participation in multilateral diplomacy in the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa The Malawi Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, facilitates Malawi’s participation in multilateral diplomacy in the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). The Mission is also accredited to the Federal Re

public of Ethiopia. Furthermore, the Mission serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritanian, Niger, Nigeria, Saharawi Arab Republic, Sierra Leone, Senegal, South Sudan, and Togo on a non-residential basis. The main objectives of the Embassy are:
1) To continue developing and promoting cordial multi-faceted relations between Malawi and the federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in line with Malawi’s Foreign Policy.

2) To strengthen the collaboration between Malawi and all African Union member States by working closely with the African Union in promoting regional and continental integration.

3) To protect and promote Malawi’s interests in her engagement with international partners and stakeholders.

H.E. Khwauli Msiska, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the AU is leading the Malawi delegation to the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, which is underway at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The meeting has been convened to deliberate on a wide-range of strategic matters concerning operations of the Union, such as Progress in the Implementation of the Theme of the Year 2026 on Water and Sanitation, AU Budget for 2027, and AU participation in the G20.

In his address, Ambassador Msiska amongst others highlighted milestones and challenges on water and sanitation in Malawi. He also emphasised the need for sustainable financing of the Union's projects, programmes and operations.

In the build-up to the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, Ambassador Khwauli Msiska participated in the Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Africa Region. These are regular and strategic meetings, whereby the Region builds consensus on issues to be discussed by African Foreign Ministers.

H.E. Khwauli Msiska, Ambassador of Malawi and Permanent Representative to the African Union led the Malawi delegation to the 20th AU Extraordinary Summit on Health.

This meeting solidified agreements by Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Health, and Finance during the 25th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, which was held a day earlier. Amongst others, it adopted an Implementation Plan for AU Roadmap on Health to 2030 and Beyond.

In addressing the Summit, H.E. Msiska stressed the need for sustainable solutions in enhancing domestic financing for health. He shared Malawi's experiences, challenges and solutions in domestic health financing. Ambassador Msiska highlighted health sector reforms following the development of the Health Financing Strategy (2023-2030), which is a guide towards transition to sustainable, equitable, and resilient health financing system. He specifically highlighted that Malawi is: Rolling-out Direct Facility Financing (DFF) nationwide to respond to community health needs; Operationalising the National Health Fund following Parliamentary approval; Strengthening engagement with the private sector on health matters; and introducing paying wards in public hospitals as part of efforts in sustainable domestic health financing.

H.E. Khwauli Msiska, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Malawi to the African Union is leading the Malawi delegation to the 25th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union on Health, which is underway in Accra, Ghana. The meeting's focus is on addressing issues concerning HIV/AIDS, TB, Marternal Health, Communicable and Non-communicable Diseases Endemic to the Continent, and Strengthening of Health Systems.

The meeting provides a platform for the continent to deliberate on milestones, best practices and challenges in the health sector. It also provides a platform for renewed committments in the provision of improved healthcare services by AU Member States. The meeting will be followed by the 20th Extraordinary Summit on Health, which will be held on 22nd July, 2026.

H.E. Khwauli Msiska, Ambassador of Malawi to Ethiopia, African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) presented his Letters of Credence to H.E. Claver Gatete, Under Secretary of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of UNECA. In the deliberations that ensured, the two discussed collaboration between Malawi and UNECA in realising social-economic development of Malawi and Southern Africa region. In particular, they focused on the ongoing assistance in the establishment of Special Economic Zones, acceleration of industrialisation, realisation of national benefits from critical minerals, and policy guidance UNECA is providing in resolving Malawi's economic challenges.

Ambassador Msiska reiterated Malawi's committment in collaborating with UNECA, so as to uplift living standards of ordinary Malawians.

Ambassador Khwauli Msiska hosted Malawians living in Ethiopia at the Official Residence in Addis Ababa. Apart from serving as a platform for welcoming the Ambassador and his spouse to Ethiopia, the gathering also provided an opportunity for networking, bonding, and celebration of Malawi culture. In his address to the Malawi Community, Ambassador Msiska urged them to be patriotic, work hard and promote Malawian values in their endeavours. He also stressed that he remains at their disposal when they need Government services. Dr. Themba Chirwa, Chairperson of the Association of Malawians in Ethiopia echoed Ambassador Msiska's call for patriotism and unity. He also urged the diaspora to be key drivers of socio-economic development in Malawi.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Malawi and its Missions abroad serve as primary coordinators in the implementation of the Malawi Diaspora Engagement Policy.

H.E. Khwauli B. Msiska Ambassador of the Republic of Malawi to Ethiopia presented letters of credence to H.E. Taye Atske Selassie, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. This ceremony marks the beginning of H.E. Khwauli Msiska's official duties in Addis Ababa. During the ceremony, H.E. Khwauli Msiska held talks with H.E Selassie, which centred on strengthening of bilateral relations between Malawi and Ethiopia in areas of climate change, migration amongst others. H.E. Khwauli Msiska also extended fraternal greetings from H.E. Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi to H.E. Selassie, President of Ethiopia.

H.E. Khwauli Msiska, Ambassador-Designate of Malawi held meetings with H.E. Innocent Shiyo, Ambassador of Tanzania, and H.E. Mc Arios Akanbong, Ambassador-Designate of Ghana. The meetings were aimed at deepening collaboration between Malawi and Tanzania and also Ghana in the African Union. H.E. Msiska will hold more of such meetings to promote common interests in the African Union and other multilateral platforms.
