The Republic of South Africa just concluded another month as a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) under the Chairship of the Republic of Uganda.

During this month South Africa participated in all the sessions of the Council, namely:

03-04 July 2026: Accra Forum on UCGs
08 July 2026: Update on the Situation in Abyei.
Informal Consultation: Engagement with the Chairperson of the AU Commission on the state of governance, peace and security in Africa, Funding Support for Somalia/AUSSOM Logistics Package and, Proposed AU Model on Trigger Mechanism for Early Warning and Early Action.
15 July 2026: Meeting of the PSC Sub-Committee on Sanctions (Experts Level) on political and socio-economic developments on preventive measures against UCG.
20 July 2026: Meeting of the Committee of Experts to consider the Proposed AU Model on Trigger Mechanism for Early Warning and Early Action.
21 July 2026: PSC Ministerial Session on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa.
22 July 2026: Consideration of the AU Commission Report on Elections in Africa for the Period of January - June 2026.
27 July 2026: Update on the Political Transition in Burkina Faso and Niger.

These are some of the key highlights for the month of July 2026:

- South Africa noted that the complex nature of the situation in the Abyei region which requires assertive and deliberate efforts by the Union as an apex of African diplomacy and conflict resolution.
- South Africa emphasised the need to close the gap between early warning and early action to prevent conflict or unconstitutional changes of government.
- On terrorism, South Africa stressed the importance of addressing the persistent root causes and conditions conducive to terrorism, including socio-economic grievances, political instability, and geopolitical tensions.
- On elections, South Africa recommended that Member States adopt a clear and comprehensive plans for responsible use of social media during electoral processes.
- South Africa called upon the African Union to sustain regular, constructive and principled engagements with countries under suspension towards the implementation of clear transition roadmaps, promote inclusive national dialogue and ensure that the agreed timelines for transition are respected.

South Africa will continue to engage in the discussions of the AUPSC in August 2026.

participated in the Opening session of the 52nd Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) in preparation for the 49th session of the Executive Council & the 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting ( ) between the AU, RECs, & RMs, scheduled to take place in El Alamein, Egypt.

During this month South Africa participated in all the sessions of the Council, namely:

07 April 2026: Flag Ceremony
08 April 2026: Open session on Hate Crimes and fighting Genocide Ideology in Africa
09 April 2026: Informal Consultation on the Impact of the Middle East Crisis on the Peace and Security Situation of Africa as well as the Consideration of the situation in Central African Republic (CAR).
16 April 2026: PSC Ministerial Session on Artificial Intelligence: Governance, Peace and Security in Africa
18 April 2026: PSC Visit to the Ethiopian AI Institute and Science and technology Museum
20 April 2026: Briefing by the A3 on its activities
23-25 April 2026: PSC field Mission to the Republic of South Sudan
27 April 2026: Open Session on Peace Support Operations in Africa
28 April 2026: Consideration of the Report on Joint African Union – Federal Government of Somalia – United Nations Progress Against Benchmarks and AUSSOM Mission Configuration Plan as well as an Update on the situation in Mali.
29-30 April 2026: 5th Annual Joint Retreat between PSC-APRM

These are some of the key highlights for the month of April 2026:

- South Africa called for the universal adherence to the Genocide Convention and urgent action towards the atrocities, including genocidal acts and the worst humanitarian crisis on the Continent in Sudan.

- South Africa encouraged sustained dialogue in CAR and called for broader peacebuilding and reconstruction efforts to prevent the country from relapsing into conflict.

- On AI, SA called for AI governance that is anchored within African norms and institutions aligning with frameworks of the African Union, particularly Agenda 2063 and the African Peace and Security Architecture, in order to assert African agency in shaping global AI governance, including through the protection of data sovereignty and the development of common continental positions that reduce fragmentation.

- South Africa lauded the growth of the A3 and encouraged extensive collaboration to strengthen the A3. Furthermore, the country highlighted that peacekeeping operations should be accompanied by political engagements in the prevention, mediation and resolution of conflicts in the pursuit of sustainable solutions.

- In South Sudan, SA reaffirmed that the Revitalized Agreement for Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) remains the paramount instrument for the resolution of the conflict in South Sudan.

South Africa will continue to engage in the discussions of the AUPSC in May 2026.

07 April 2026| South Africa was officially welcomed & presented as a new member of the AU Peace and Security Council (2026-28) during the Flag Ceremony held at the PSC Chamber, AU HQ in Addis Ababa.

The SA delegation led by Ms Matheko Ursula Letsie, Deputy Permanent Representative installed the national flag to signify the official commencement of SA's tenure in the Council.

South Africa was elected to serve and represent the Southern region in the AUPSC, with the Kingdom of Lesotho, during the AU Summit in February 2026.

The South African delegation led by H.E. Nonceba Losi just concluded its participation in the Induction/ Orientation for newly elected members of the African Union Peace and Security Council, held in Matsapha, Kingdom of Eswatini.

The objective of the Induction was to equip new members of the Peace and Security Council through the understanding of the mandate, working methods, Rules of Procedure, activities of the PSC amongst others.

Ambassador Losi extended SA's appreciation to the AU Member States for the trust and confidence placed in SA. She reaffirmed "SA's acceptance & commitment to serving the collective interests of our Continent with integrity, purpose, and steadfast resolve."

H.E. Nonceba Losi held a constructive meeting with H.E.
Adam Drury, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of the UK to the AU.

The meeting highlighted the bilateral relations between the two countries. The discussions also focused on issues affecting the continent, namely, peace and security as well as health matters.

16 March 2026| The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition of South Africa undertook a Trade Mission to to strengthen trade and investment opportunities as well as unlock new opportunities between SA & Ethiopia in various sectors: Agriculture & Agro-processing, ICT & Metal Fabrication.

The Trade Mission is underpinned by the signed agreements between South Africa and Ethiopia to expand commercial partnerships and unlock new opportunities in many different areas such as tourism, technology, health, agriculture and education...

The Trade Mission comprised of a Business Forum, B2B meetings and Site visits to expand South African company visibility, forge new partnerships & joint ventures between companies.

During the Business Forum, H.E. Nonceba Losi underscored the economic complementarities between SA and Ethiopia which must be harnessed through increased B2B engagements, investment facilitation and sustained dialogue.

Ambassador Losi encouraged participants to build networks, build their enterprises and contribute to broader regional integration and shared prosperity as envisaged in .
