AASTU Strengthens China–Africa Collaboration Through Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on Green Construction and Intelligent Engineering.

Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, led by Dr. Dereje Engida president of the university, participated in a series of major events held on May 14–15 in Wuhan, China, related to the establishment of the China–Ethiopia “Belt and Road” Joint Laboratory on Civil Engineering Green Construction and Intelligent Operation & Maintenance. The events included the kickoff and construction promotion meeting, the inaugural Academic Committee meeting, and the International Conference on Green Construction and Intelligent Operation & Maintenance, hosted in collaboration with Hubei University of Technology (HBUT).
The joint laboratory was established to strengthen China–Africa cooperation in green, intelligent, and low-carbon construction technologies. During the meetings, both universities highlighted the importance of scientific innovation, sustainable engineering, and international talent development in addressing future construction challenges. HBUT emphasized that the laboratory will serve as a global innovation platform and a center for cultivating highly skilled professionals under the Belt and Road Initiative.
In his remarks, Dr. Dereje Engida stated that the initiative represents an important bridge for China–Africa scientific and technological cooperation. He noted Ethiopia’s strong development potential and AASTU’s growing research capacity in construction quality and technology. AASTU expressed its commitment to advancing research in green building materials, intelligent operation and maintenance, climate-adaptive design, and engineering standards while helping train a new generation of African engineers.
During the events, Dr. Tesfaye Alemu was officially appointed Ethiopian Director of the Joint Laboratory and member of its Academic Committee, while Dr. Dereje Engida was appointed to the Construction Advisory Committee. Discussions during the Academic Committee meeting focused on promoting green and digital transformation, strengthening industry-education integration, improving standardization and innovation systems, and accelerating the implementation of research outcomes across borders.
The laboratory will operate with dual headquarters in China and Ethiopia and plans to establish research centers in South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Egypt, and Sudan, along with international workstations in Turkey, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and South Korea. Experts and scholars from several countries also participated in the international conference, exchanging ideas on green construction, intelligent infrastructure management, structural safety, and China–Africa scientific collaboration.
The events concluded with the signing of an agreement among AASTU, HBUT, and Beijing New Building Materials Public Limited Company (BNBM) to establish the “Belt and Road” College of Excellent Engineers, further strengthening cooperation in research, innovation, and professional training for sustainable infrastructure development in Africa and beyond.

AASTU Hosted 11th Science and Engineering Fair, May 16, 2026.
Addis Ababa Science and Technology University successfully held its 11th Science and Engineering Fair under the theme “Inculcating Science and Engineering Culture and Promoting Innovation.” The annual event showcased the creativity and innovation of students from AASTU’s STEM Center, highlighting their project-based learning and problem-solving skills. This year’s competition featured seven student-led projects that addressed pressing national challenges in areas such as agriculture, health sector, transportation, and waste management. These projects were the outcomes of hands-on training and mentorship provided by the STEM Center. The students not only identified real-world problems but also developed practical solutions, demonstrating the effectiveness of STEM education in nurturing future innovators.

AASTU Showcases Global Partnerships for Community Impact at Kenya Leadership and Stakeholder Forum

AASTU is honored to participate in the IMPACT-HE Project Training Workshop and Leadership Forum, organized through OBREAL with support from the European Union, held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 4–8 May 2026.
The forum, held under the theme “African Universities Driving Local Development: Visibility, Advocacy, Impact,” convened university leaders from Kenya and Ethiopia, policymakers, ambassadors, development partners, and international organizations and associations to discuss the transformative role of higher education institutions in addressing societal challenges and promoting sustainable development across Africa. The forum was held alongside the launch of the Study and Research in Africa (SRIA), a new European Union initiative, incorporating important discussions on policy awareness and strategic collaboration.
The Academic Vice President, Dr. Kemal Ibrahim, representing AASTU in the panel discussion on: "IMPACT HE: Opportunities for showcasing African universities as local impact agents” at the forum. During the discussion, Dr. Kemal highlighted AASTU’s strong dedication to addressing societal challenges by working closely with local communities to develop collaborative and sustainable solutions.
The training workshop brought together staff members from IMPACT-HE partner universities who are actively engaged in the management and coordination of international cooperation and externally funded projects. The training workshop marked the official launch of the IMPACT-HE Training Programme on project management, introducing a hybrid learning journey that combines in-person engagement with structured online modular learning through the IMPACT-HE training platform. The programme aimed to build the capacity of Directors of International Relations and Grants Management Officers.

የሳይንስና ቴክኖሎጂ ማዕከል የሆነው የአዲስ አበባ ሳይንስና ቴክኖሎጂ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ተማሪዎችና መምህራን በአዲስ ኢንተርናሽናል ኮንቬንሽን ኤግዚቢሽን ማዕከል እየተካሄደ የሚገኘውን “የኢትዮጵያ ታምርት” 2018 ኤክስፖን ጎበኙ።
ከሚያዝያ 25 እስከ 30 ቀን 2018 ዓ.ም ድረስ የሚቆየው ይህ ብሄራዊ የኢንዱስትሪ ምርቶች ትዕይንት ዩኒቨርሲቲው ካለው “ዩኒቨርሲቲ ለኢንዱስትሪ” መሪ ቃል አንጻር ከዘርፉ ጋር ያለውን ቁርኝት ይበልጥ ለማጠናከር ትልቅ አጋጣሚ ፈጥሯል።
ጉብኝቱ ተማሪዎች በክፍል ውስጥ የቀሰሙትን የንድፈ-ሀሳብ ዕውቀት ከሀገሪቱ ነባራዊ የኢንዱስትሪ ውጤቶች ጋር እንዲያስተሳስሩ ዕድል የሰጠ መሆኑ ተገልጿል። በኤክስፖው ላይ የተገኘው የዩኒቨርሲቲው ልዑክ በተለይም በአዳዲስ የፈጠራ ስራዎችና ቴክኖሎጂዎች ዙሪያ ሰፊ ተሞክሮ የቀሰመ ሲሆን ይህም ለወደፊት የምርምር ስራዎቻቸው ትልቅ ግብዓት እንደሚያበረክት ተመልክቷል።
በኤክስፖው ወቅት በሀገር በቀል ፋብሪካዎች፣ በኢንቨስተሮች እና በአምራቾች መካከል የታየው ጠንካራ መስተጋብር ለተማሪዎች በአካል ተገኝተው ትልቅ ትምህርት የቀሰሙበት አጋጣሚ ሆኗል። ይህም ተማሪዎች የወደፊት የሥራ ዕድላቸውን አስቀድመው እንዲቃኙና ከዘርፉ ባለሙያዎች ጋር የገበያ ትስስር እንዲፈጥሩ መንገድ የከፈተ ከመሆኑ በዘለለ በሀገራዊ የፈጠራ ሥራዎች ላይ ተሰማርተው የራሳቸውን አሻራ ለማሳረፍ ከፍተኛ የሞራል መነሳሳትን እንዲያገኙ ረድቷቸዋል።
የኤክስፖው ዋነኛ ዓላማ የኢትዮጵያን ምርት ማበረታታትና ማስተዋወቅ እንደመሆኑ ዩኒቨርሲቲው በዚህ ታሪካዊ እንቅስቃሴ ውስጥ ግንባር ቀደም ተሳታፊ በመሆን ለሀገራዊ ምርትና ምርታማነት ያለውን አጋርነት በተግባር አሳይቷል።
ይህ ጉብኝት ዩኒቨርሲቲው ለኢንዱስትሪው የሚመጥን በዕውቀትና በክህሎት የበለፀገ ጥራት ያለው የሰው ኃይል ለማፍራት የጀመረውን ጉዞ የሚያግዝ መሆኑ ተመላክቷል።

የሂሳብ ትምህርትን በሳይንስ፣ ቴክኖሎጂ እና ምህንድስና (STEM) ማገዝ ለተሻለ ውጤት እንደሚያበቃ ተገለፀ

አዲስ አበባ ሳይንስና ቴክኖሎጂ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ማህበረሰብን ተጠቃሚ የሚያደርጉ የምርምርና የቴክኖሎጂ ሽግግር ስራዎችን ለማጠናከር በያዘው ዕቅድ መሰረት፣ ለሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርት ቤት መምህራን "የሂሳብ ትምህርትን በሳይንስ፣ ቴክኖሎጂ እና ምህንድስና ማገዝ" በሚል ርዕስ ሲሰጥ የቆየው ስልጠና በስኬት ተጠናቋል።
በዩኒቨርሲቲው የማህበረሰብ አሳታፊነት ዳይሬክቶሬት ድጋፍ የተደረገለት ይህ ፕሮጀክት በዋና ተመራማሪ ዶ/ር ሽመልስ በቀለ እና በረዳት ተመራማሪ ዶ/ር መላኩ በርሄ የተመራ ነው፡፡ የስልተናው ትኩረቱንም የሂሳብ ትምህርትን በዘመናዊ ቴክኖሎጂ እና በተግባራዊ ትምህርት የታገዘ ለማድረግ የመምህራንን አቅም ማጎልበት ላይ ያተኮረ ነው፡፡
ለተከታታይ ስምንት ሳምንታት በሳምንቱ መጨረሻ ቀናት (ቅዳሜና እሁድ) ሲሰጥ የቆየው ይህ ስልጠና ከአራት የአዲስ አበባ ክፍለ ከተሞች ማለትም ከአቃቂ ቃሊቲ፣ ከቦሌ፣ ከንፋስ ስልክ እና ከለሚ ኩራ ክፍለ ከተሞች የተውጣጡ መምህራንን ያሳተፈ ነበር። በዚህ መርሃ ግብር ላይ በአጠቃላይ 81 የሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርት ቤት መምህራን ተሳታፊ የሆኑ ሲሆን ከእነዚህም መካከል 24ቱ ሴቶች ሲሆኑ ቀሪዎቹ 57 መምህራን ደግሞ ወንዶች መሆናቸው ተገልጿል። ስልጠናው መምህራኑ መደበኛ የስራ ሰዓታቸውን ሳይለቁ በሳምንቱ መጨረሻ ዕረፍታቸው ላይ እውቀታቸውን እንዲያዳብሩ ታስቦ የተመቻቸ እንደነበርም ታውቋል።
የፕሮጀክቱ ዋና ተመራማሪ ዶ/ር ሽመልስ በቀለ እንደገለጹት ስልጠናው የሂሳብ ትምህርትን ውጤት ለማሻሻል መምህራን ያላቸውን ሚና ማዕከል ያደረገ ነው። መምህራኑ ሂሳብን ከገሃዱ ዓለም ክስተቶች ጋር በማቀናጀት፣ ቴክኖሎጂን በመጠቀምና ከሌሎች የሳይንስ ዘርፎች ጋር በማስተሳሰር ለተማሪዎች ማቅረብ የሚያስችላቸውን አቅም እንዲገነቡ ተደርጓል።
ይህም ተማሪዎች ሂሳብን በንድፈ-ሀሳብ ብቻ ሳይሆን በ21ኛው ክፍለ ዘመን ክህሎቶች ታግዘው ወደውት እንዲማሩ የሚያስችል መሆኑን ተመራማሪው አስረድተዋል።
በዕለቱ በተከናወነው የማጠቃለያ መርሃ ግብር ላይ የዩኒቨርሲቲው የምርምርና ቴክኖሎጂ ሽግግር ም/ፕሬዝዳንት ዶ/ር አብረሃም ደበበ፣ የማህበረሰብ አሳታፊነት ዳይሬክተር ዶ/ር ቀናቱ አንጋሳ እንዲሁም የአዲስ አበባ ት/ም ቢሮ አመራሮች እና የክፍለ ከተማ ትምህርት ቢሮ ተወካዮች ተገኝተዋል።
በወቅቱም ዶ/ር አብረሃም ደበበ ባስተላለፉት መልዕክት አዲስ አበባ ሳይንስና ቴክኖሎጂ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ከመማር ማስተማር ስራው ጎን ለጎን የምርምር ውጤቶችን እና የማህበረሰብ አሳታፊ የሆኑ ስራዎች ወደ ማህበረሰቡ በማውረድ ረገድ ያለውን ቁርጠኝነት አረጋግጠዋል።
ዶ/ር ቀናቱ አንጋሳ በበኩላቸው የዩኒቨርሲቲው የማህበረሰብ አሳታፊነት ዳይሬክቶሬት በቀጣይም የትምህርት ጥራትን ለማረጋገጥና የቴክኖሎጂ ሽግግርን ለማፋጠን የሚረዱ መሰል የድጋፍ ስራዎችን አጠናክሮ እንደሚቀጥል ገልጸዋል።
ሰልጣኝ መምህራን በሰጡት አስተያየት ስልጠናው አዳዲስ የማስተማር ስነ-ዘዴዎችን ያስጨበጣቸውና የሂሳብ ትምህርትን በሳይንስ፤ቴክኖሎጂ እና ምህንድስና የትምህርት ዘርፍ አቀናጅቶ ለመተግበር የሚያስችል ተጨማሪ አቅም የፈጠረላቸው መሆኑን ገልጸዋል።
