🇪🇹📚🌍 Advancing Climate-Smart Education for Pastoralist Communities
A collaborative working session held under the Climate Smart Education Systems Initiative (CSESI) brought together the Ministry of Education, IIEP-UNESCO, and national and international researchers to strengthen climate-smart, inclusive, and gender-responsive education for Ethiopia’s pastoralist communities.
Held in Addis Ababa, the session focused on evidence-based policies, plans, and climate data. Participants reviewed key findings gathered so far, identified existing gaps, and jointly developed a zero-draft annotated outline that will guide the development of strategic climate-smart education solutions for pastoralist communities.
Through partnership and evidence-based planning, the initiative is contributing to a more resilient, responsive, and future-ready education system that supports learners in the face of climate change.

🚀Ethiopia strengthens its path toward ethical and inclusive AI development!!!
Validation workshop of Ethiopia’s AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) Report marks an important milestone in shaping the country’s digital future. The UNESCO AI Readiness Assessment Methodology provides a comprehensive framework to evaluate a country’s preparedness for AI. It goes beyond technical capacity, examining governance systems, ethical safeguards, institutional coordination, and alignment with human rights principles.
For Ethiopia, this assessment highlights both strong foundations and key priority areas. These include strengthening digital infrastructure, improving data governance, investing in skills and talent, and enhancing regulatory and institutional coordination to support responsible AI development.
The project was made possible through the financial support of the European Union, in partnership with UNESCO and the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute.

🌐 Advancing a more inclusive and multilingual Internet in
UNESCO is proud to support the first Universal Acceptance Day celebration in in partnership with and Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU).
Universal Acceptance (UA) is a key principle to ensure that all valid domain names and email addresses - regardless of language, script, or length - work seamlessly across internet-enabled applications. As the next billion users come online primarily from non-English speaking regions, UA is becoming essential to building a more equitable, accessible, and inclusive internet.
As highlighted by Dr. Rita Bissoonauth, Director of UNESCO Addis Ababa during her opening remark “Universal Acceptance is not simply a technical matter ; it is a prerequisite for equitable digital transformation.” Ensuring that all valid domain names and email addresses work seamlessly across digital platforms, regardless of language or script, is essential to building a truly multilingual and inclusive Internet.
With more than 80 spoken languages and the rich heritage of the Geʽez script, Ethiopia has a unique role to play in advancing digital inclusion and ensuring that no language and no community are left behind online.
Through this initiative, UNESCO is helping raise awareness among academic and technical institutions about Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) and Email Address Internationalization (EAI), contributing to a digital transformation that respects linguistic and cultural diversity.

📢Strengthening journalists and media practitioners’ skills to better detect dis-misinformation

From 30 April to 1 May 2026, UNESCO LO, together with OHCHR and CEHRO, brought together journalists and media professionals in Addis Ababa for a hands-on training focused on dis-misinformation, human rights and the protection of civic space.

A key focus of the training was the critical role journalists play in ensuring that the public has access to reliable, independent, and timely information, particularly in contexts marked by heightened information risks and societal tensions.
This initiative contributes to strengthening independent journalism in Ethiopia and fostering a safer, more informed, and inclusive information environment.

This activity was supported by UNESCO's Multi-Donor Programme (MDP), in collaboration with OHCHR and CEHRO.
