The two rounds of training on the Justice for Children Training Manual, with a particular focus on refugee children in Ethiopia, conducted for Refugee Community Representatives and participants drawn from the justice, peace and security, as well as social sectors in Semera Town, have been successfully concluded.

The training, which was highly engaging and interactive, successfully achieved the objective of creating the intended awareness among participants from the relevant sectors.

The initiative was designed to strengthen the capacity of refugee communities and key stakeholders, including actors from the justice, peace and security, and social sectors, to better address issues affecting children within refugee settings.

The workshops ultimately aimed to promote child protection and enhance access to justice for children in refugee communities.

Throughout the sessions, participants gained knowledge and practical insights on legal and policy frameworks for child protection, the core principles of Justice for Children, child-friendly communication and ethical standards, case management and referral pathways, as well as community roles in preventing and responding to violence against children.

The training was organized by Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS), with financial support from UNICEF, reaffirming the commitment of both institutions to strengthening child protection systems and ensuring the well-being and rights of refugee children in Ethiopia.

The capacity-building workshop, attended by justice and security officials from the Somali Regional State, has successful been concluded.

Its purpose was to strengthen participants’ expertise, awareness and practical skills to help them effectively respond to the unique justice needs of refugee children.

Through discussions and peer-learning exchanges, attendees explored feasible approaches to advancing friendly, inclusive and rights-based access to justice for child refugees.

Reflecting on their experience, participants described the sessions as enriching and emphasized that the workshop not only broadened their understanding but also provided substantial insights they can apply in their daily work.

The sessions also sought to deepen their understanding of legal and institutional frameworks on refugee protection, ensuring that the rights, safety and well-being of refugee children are upheld.

Hosted in Jigjiga city, the training workshop was organized by Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) with financial support from UNICEF.

The training aims to raise awareness and strengthen ongoing efforts to promote child protection and ensure improved access to justice within refugee communities.

The initiative seeks to enhance participants’ understanding of child rights and legal protection frameworks, strengthen capacities on child-sensitive justice approaches, improve case identification, referral, and follow-up mechanisms, support efforts to prevent and respond to Violence Against Children (VAC), and foster stronger coordination and collaboration among key stakeholders.

Participants are taking part in sessions covering a range of key thematic areas, including legal and policy frameworks for child protection, core principles of Justice for Children, child-friendly communication and ethical standards, case management and referral pathways, as well as the role of communities in preventing and responding to violence against children.

Refugee representatives are attending a training workshop on “Access to Inclusive Justice for Refugee Children in Ethiopia” in Jigjiga city of the Somali Regional State.

The training is a platform for refugee leaders to gain knowledge and skills to advocate for the rights of children within their communities.

In his remarks @ the opening of the training, RRS Deputy Director General Bruhtesfa Mulugeta underlined that such programs are important in equipping trainees with what it takes to defend the rights of children.

Seizing the opportunity, Bruhtesfa called on participants to actively engage in the sessions and encouraged them to play their part and ensure the success of the program.

By directly referring to the manual, participants will strengthen their ability to protect vulnerable children, promote justice and ensure that every child’s voice is heard.

The participation of refugee representatives in the training highlights the importance Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) and UNICEF attach to inclusion and collaboration.

Their lived experiences would highly help enrich the session, ensuring that solutions are practical, compassionate and community driven.

It’s to be recalled that a week ago, RRS provided training of trainers for RRS Head Office and Branch Office protection officers in Adama city with the financial assistance of UNICEF and academic support of Addis Ababa University.

This afternoon, Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) and Mary Joy Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aspiration to strengthen their bilateral engagements.

Among other things, the two sides agreed to advance strategic advocacy and joint resource mobilization efforts, enhance knowledge sharing and collaborate on project management and community engagement initiatives for a lasting, inclusive impact.

The MoU was signed by RRS Director General Teyiba Hassen and Mary Joy Ethiopia Founder and Executive Director Sister Zebider Zewdie, representing their respective institutions.

The deal is believed to establish a framework for cooperation and coordination between RRS and Mary Joy Ethiopia in areas of mutual interest.
