Ahead of tomorrow's Pan-African Women's Day commemorations, a high-level delegation led by the African Union Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa, held a series of high-level engagements with the Government of Namibia to advance advocacy for the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls ( ).

The delegation met with Namibia's Ministers responsible for Gender Equality, Justice, and International Relations and Trade, as well as the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Secretary to the National Assembly, and the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Gender Equality, Health and Social Welfare.

Discussions centred on the importance of Namibia's signature, ratification, and implementation of this landmark continental instrument, which seeks to strengthen prevention, protection, and response efforts to end violence against women and girls across Africa.

The Government of Namibia's commitment to initiate the necessary internal processes towards signing and ratifying the Convention was warmly welcomed. This commitment reflects strong political leadership and a shared resolve to uphold the rights, dignity, and safety of women and girls.

The advocacy mission is taking place alongside the Sixth Ordinary Session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Social Development, Labour and Employment (STC-SDLE-6) and the commemoration of Pan-African Women's Day 2026 in Windhoek, reaffirming the African Union's commitment to accelerating the adoption, ratification, domestication, and implementation of the across Member States.

Ending violence against women and girls requires sustained political will, strong partnerships, and collective action. Together, we can build an Africa where every woman and girl lives free from violence.
