In Ethiopia’s Central Rift Valley, climate-smart agriculture is helping smallholder farmers build more resilient livelihoods.

On the second day of his Ethiopia mission, GGGI Deputy Executive Director Dr. Malle Fofana visited climate-smart agriculture initiatives in the Central Rift Valley, where solar-powered irrigation and vermicompost production are supporting smallholder farmers to strengthen food security, livelihoods and climate resilience.

The work is part of a project funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by GGGI in partnership with E4Impact.

The field visit also brought an opportunity to engage with local government and community partners, and women cooperative association.

It is one example of how GGGI works with governments, development partners and communities to turn climate finance and green growth approaches into practical solutions that respond to local needs.

From policy and investment to implementation on the ground, partnerships remain at the heart of GGGI’s work in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is a founding Member State of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), with more than a decade of collaboration to advance climate-resilient development, green investment and inclusive growth.

Today, GGGI Deputy Executive Director Dr. Malle Fofana began a two-day mission to Addis Ababa, meeting with H.E. Magnus Lennartsson, Ambassador of Sweden to Ethiopia, and Ms. Kristine Hauge Storholt, Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, longstanding partners supporting climate and green growth priorities in Ethiopia.

The discussions provided an opportunity to reflect on ongoing collaboration and how partnerships can continue to translate Ethiopia’s climate ambitions into practical, investable solutions.

With Ethiopia preparing to host COP32, this work takes on added significance. But the partnership extends well beyond the conference, strengthening climate finance, investment readiness and green growth in Ethiopia for the longer term.

During his visit at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Dr. Fofana also signed the Embassy’s book of condolences following the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway, expressing his condolences to the Royal Family and the people of Norway.

Dr. Fofana also held a courtesy meeting with the COP32 Presidency Secretariat as part of the mission.

Strengthening GESI-Responsive Leadership in Ethiopia's Forestry Sector

GGGI Ethiopia, in partnership with the Ethiopian Forestry Development-EFD, organizes a two-day capacity building on GESI (Gender Equality and Social Inclusion) responsive leadership in Adama, on September 1–2, 2026.

The event is part of the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Forested Landscape (CSMFL) project, funded by Sida, and brings together EFD's leadership team, including Director General Mr. Kebede Yimam, Deputy Director General Mr. Damena Darota, and directors and regional office leaders from across the country.

The first day covered foundational concepts, self-reflection, and status dynamics, while the second turns to cognitive biases, institutional power, and practical tools and commitments.

Opening the event, H.E. Mr. Kebede Yimam highlighted how central gender equality and inclusion are to EFD's mandate and to achieving sustainable development more broadly, noting that the capacity building feeds directly into the government's wider push for inclusive development.

In his welcoming remarks, GGGI Ethiopia Country Director Mr. Okechukwu Daniel Ogbonnaya stressed that GESI must be built in from the start, not added as an afterthought, and that participation has to be meaningful rather than a box-ticking exercise. He pointed out that climate change hits marginalized groups hardest, which is why decision-makers need the understanding and readiness to make their plans and actions GESI-sensitive, so that development reaches every part of society and lasts.

Led by GGGI Ethiopia's GESI Advisor, Mrs. Frehiwot Tsegaye, the sessions are interactive and practical, with participants working toward concrete action points to carry the work forward.

We thank Sida for funding the CSMFL project, and EFD and all our partners for their continued collaboration in advancing inclusive, GESI-responsive development in Ethiopia.

🌍 From Negotiation to a Validated Plan: Southwest Ethiopia's Land Use Journey Continues

Today in Bonga, GGGI, through its Sida-funded CSMFL project, and the Southwest Ethiopia Peoples' Region government came together for a validation workshop on the region's Integrated Land Use and Forest Sector Action Plan.

Government leaders, researchers and technical experts reviewed the draft plan shaped by months of consultation, field assessment and hard-won negotiation across sectors, agriculture, forestry, mining, water, urban development and more.

This plan represents a shared, evidence-based roadmap for balancing growth with the protection of one of Ethiopia's most biodiverse landscapes.

Ethiopia's Carbon Market Journey: What Comes Next

We've followed Ethiopia's carbon market from strategy to law. Now, we follow it into the field.

Ethiopia has moved with unusual speed and rigour on carbon market readiness. A national strategy is in place. The Carbon Market Proclamation has been ratified by Parliament. Partnerships are active. Institutions are being strengthened.

The next chapter is about translating that foundation into real projects, real finance, and real benefits for communities and ecosystems.

This effort is being driven by relevant Ethiopian government institutions, alongside GGGI, FCDO, and other partners.

Today, our Country Director, Okechukwu Daniel Ogbonnaya and his deputy, Lucy Atim, met with Michael Fink, Head of Office for the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) in Addis Ababa, for a strategic bilateral exchange.

The bilateral exchange centered on synchronizing our institutional approaches to adaptive landscapes, food systems, and conflict-sensitive governance. By mapping ADA’s development focus alongside GGGI’s green growth frameworks, both organizations are laying the foundation for coordinated, high-impact interventions.

As GGGI drives green growth transition and climate resilience in Ethiopia, aligning our technical implementation frameworks with key partners like ADA ensures our interventions deliver long-term, community-centered impact.

🌍 SYMBIOTIC Project Kicks Off in Ethiopia: Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Economic Planning

GGGI Ethiopia joined the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute- EBI, Ministry of Planning and Development - Ethiopia, Nature Conservation The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU), NABU Ethiopia, and Internews today for the national kick-off of SYMBIOTIC in Ethiopia, marking an important milestone as the project moves into implementation.

Funded by Germany's International Climate Initiative (IKI) and implemented across Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Indonesia, and Kyrgyzstan, SYMBIOTIC brings together policy, education, communication, and societal engagement to drive systemic change for biodiversity, closing the gap between commitments like Ethiopia's NBSAP and real implementation on the ground.

In Ethiopia, GGGI leads Output III: Policies and Private Sector Engagement, helping government and business decision-makers integrate biodiversity into fiscal planning, regulatory tools, and business practice through natural capital accounting and biodiversity-aligned investment frameworks.

Today's kick-off brought together voices from EBI, MoPD, NABU Ethiopia, and Internews and other relevant stakeholders to set the agenda for systemic change. 🌱

Communities, Countries, and the Private Sector

Carbon markets are only worth building if the benefits are shared fairly.

For too long, the conversation around carbon markets has focused on buyers and sellers, overlooking the communities whose forests, land, and livelihoods are the very foundation of the credits being traded.

A well-designed carbon market delivers real co-benefits, income for smallholders, biodiversity protection, and stronger local governance. But this doesn't happen by default. It has to be designed in, through law, through institutions, and through accountability.

Ethiopia's Carbon Market Proclamation reflects this principle, that climate finance must be equitable, transparent, and reach those closest to the resource.

Climate Finance and Carbon Markets: Bridging the Funding Gap

Carbon markets are often pitched as the answer to the climate finance gap, a way to unlock private capital at scale. They can be. But only for countries ready to receive it.

That's the real bottleneck, not just money, but institutions capable of managing it, accounting for it, and proving results.

This is where GGGI, with its partners, works with the Government of Ethiopia, supporting institutional accreditation for larger climate finance access, building bankable project proposals, and strengthening the systems that make climate finance credible.

GGGI Africa is looking for a Climate Finance Senior Officer / Project Manager to lead the implementation of the Phase 2 Transformative Climate Finance Program of the African Union – Green Recovery Action Plan (TCFP AU-GRAP).

Based at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the successful candidate will work closely with the African Union Commission to support climate finance mobilization and the development of bankable investment projects across the following countries: Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Namibia, Rwanda, Senega, and Zambia.

We're looking for outstanding candidates with:

✅ A Master's degree (or higher) in Finance, Economics, Climate Finance, International Development, Business Administration, Project Management, or a related field.
✅ 7–10 years of relevant professional experience in climate finance, investment/project finance, sustainable development, or program management.
✅ At least 2 years of international professional experience.
✅ Fluency in English (French is a strong advantage).
✅ Proven experience leading complex, multi-country, donor-funded programs and engaging high-level stakeholders.

In this role, you will:

🌍 Lead the implementation of a flagship multi-country climate finance program.
💼 Structure bankable climate investment projects and mobilize green finance.
🤝 Engage governments, development partners, investors, and the private sector.
📈 Oversee program delivery, budgets, monitoring and evaluation, and stakeholder coordination.
🎓 Strengthen institutional capacity and support knowledge-sharing on climate finance.
