European Union in Ethiopia

Power that cannot be delivered reliably is power that does not arrive. RISED, Renewable Integrated Sustainable Energy and Digitalisation, is a €270 million programme financed by the European Union and , and implemented with Ethiopian Electric Power. It modernises the grid that carries Ethiopia's electricity, and the broadband that runs along the same corridors.
The programme covers four areas:
- Substation automation, so that faults are isolated and power restored faster.
- A new cyber-secure load dispatch centre, giving national visibility over the grid.
- Rehabilitation of the 120 MW Ashegoda wind farm.
- Expansion of broadband infrastructure along the same transmission corridors.

RISED forms part of the investment package for Ethiopia.

On October 6th, Team Leader Anna Lixi and Programme Officer Miriam Skare went to Jigjiga to monitor the implementation of the EU co-funded Joint Programme on Strengthening the Institutional Capacity of Gender Machineries in Ethiopia. During meetings with the regional bureau of the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs and with university partners, we were happy to see that the project activities strengthening regional gender machineries are having great impact. The Joint Programme is also funded by Spanish Cooperation and recently Irish Aid has joined in as well. Implementation is led by UN Women and UNFPA in close collaboration with MoWSA.

The EU Ambassador and the President of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia visited the newly built Federal Supreme Court. The visit showcased the smart courtrooms established with EU support and how digital solutions can contribute to more efficient, transparent and accessible justice services. A key moment was the inauguration of the sentencing guideline translated into three local languages with EU support, helping make justice more accessible to citizens. Through its support to the digitalisation of the judiciary, the EU is helping strengthen public institutions and improve the delivery of justice services for people across Ethiopia. This reflects the Global Gateway approach: supporting trusted and sustainable digital transformation that delivers tangible benefits for citizens.

📢EU CALL FOR PROPOSALS – ETHIOPIA

The European Union has launched a new Call for Proposals to advance sustainable durable solutions for forcibly displaced populations and affected host communities in Ethiopia.

📌 Call: Enhancing Economic Transformation in Conflict- and Migration-Prone Regions and Strengthening IDP Policy and Programming

Indicative funding: EUR 9 million

Two Specific Objectives:
1️⃣ Enhancing economic transformation in conflict- and migration-prone regions
2️⃣ Strengthening IDP policy and programming

Who can apply?
NGOs • International organisations • Economic operators • Research institutions
Consortia are encouraged.

Applicants/consortia should demonstrate relevant experience in socio-economic inclusion, durable solutions and policy dialogue, operational presence in Tigray, Somali, Gambella or Benishangul-Gumuz, EU grant management, territorial coordination and FSTP schemes.

Yeshi used to bake her injera over firewood, gathering the fuel, tending the fire and breathing the smoke through the whole working day. She now bakes on an electric stove and griddle. No waiting for heat, no smoke in the room, and hours returned to her that used to go on the fire.
More injera, more orders filled, more of the day left for everything else.
