The Food Processing Business Incubation Center Handed Over to College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences

Arsi University has officially handed over its Food Processing Business Incubation Center to the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, following the completion of all installation processes under the project coordinators’ supervision.
The handover ceremony brought together university senior officials and members of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Managing Council, who attended the event to witness the transition of responsibility and oversight for the newly established center.
During the ceremony, project coordinators presented the center as a platform intended to support aspiring entrepreneurs and accelerate the development of business ideas in the food processing sector. The participants discussed how the center is expected to contribute to capacity building, innovation, and practical business development among stakeholders.
However, many participants also raised concerns regarding the sustainability of the center, emphasizing that long-term success will depend on continued funding, operational capacity, skilled staffing, and ongoing support mechanisms.
Participants expressed hope that the center will bring tangible impact by enabling trainees and innovators to turn their ideas into viable businesses, while also ensuring that the facility remains functional and productive beyond the initial project phase.
Arsi University officials and the College Managing Council reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively to ensure that the Food Processing Business Incubation Center delivers its intended outcomes and strengthens the entrepreneurship ecosystem within the agriculture and food value chain.

Guarantee Agreement for SMEs and Cooperatives Operating in Arsi Zone

Today, the College of Business and Economics (CoBE) of Arsi University signed a tri-partite agreement with Lay Volunteers International Association (LVIA) and Cooperative Bank of Oromia under the RELINT-2024 (Viminale-2) Project at Addis Ababa-LVIA Office.

The partnership aims to address the root causes of irregular migration by creating sustainable employment opportunities for youth in migrant-prone areas of Arsi Zone. Through a €50,000 guarantee fund provided by LVIA, Cooperative Bank of Oromia will leverage the fund to establish a €100,000 loan facility for cooperatives and SMEs engaged in agricultural businesses.
Under the agreement, CoBE will be responsible for the screening and business viability assessment of loan applicants, as well as the approval of business plans and loan recommendations. The bank will process and disburse loans based on its lending procedures and collateral requirements. CoBE will also provide post-loan Business Development Services (BDS) to support business growth, enhance loan repayment, and ensure the sustainability of the revolving fund mechanism. This collaboration will keep serving other targets even beyond the life-span of the project.
The initiative builds on the successful experience of the previous AFFIDATO project, through which another €50,000 guarantee fund was established and enabled two SMEs in Bale Zone to access business loans for their agribusiness activities, demonstrating the potential of partnership-based financing mechanisms in promoting entrepreneurship and job creation.
Such collaboration has a significant impact on unlocking financial access, nurturing local enterprises, and reducing irregular migration through employment opportunity creation.
