Asella City and Arsi University's Leadership Visit site for Community School construction.

Arsi University continues to demonstrate that a university’s responsibility extends beyond teaching and research to making a meaningful contribution to the development of its surrounding community.

As part of this commitment, Arsi University is supporting the construction of a new school, creating a better learning environment and contributing to the educational development of the it's community.

What makes this initiative particularly special is that the school will be constructed through contributions mobilized from the Arsi University community and other organizations and partners. The project is not being financed from the government treasury budget. Instead, it reflects the power of voluntary contribution, collective responsibility, partnership, and community engagement.

The initiative demonstrates what can be achieved when university leaders, academic and administrative staff, students, alumni, partners, and other organizations come together around a shared vision.

Education is an investment in the future. By building a school today, we are helping build knowledgeable, skilled, responsible, and empowered citizens for tomorrow.
Arsi University remains committed to working with communities and partners to create lasting social impact and contribute to Ethiopia’s sustainable development. The Asella city leadership and University leadership have visited the site for the school construction. We would like to thank the city leadership and other partners.

Arsi University’s College of Business and Economics (CoBE) has conducted a two-day final pitching event (September 29–30, 2026) for youth-owned green businesses incubated under the Wear the Green Future Project (Edukan's Project).

A total of 39 startups from Asella, Adama, Modjo, Bishoftu and Sheger have received entrepreneurship training, tailored mentorship, business development support and startup funding. So far, 35 active startups have received ETB 4,265,220.00 in startup funding for machinery and essential operating costs.

The final pitch provided startups with an opportunity to present their businesses and compete for the remaining ETB 1,134,780.00 in startup funding. The pitches were evaluated by business and garment-sector experts, including mentors, a garment trainer from Athlete Kenenisa Bekele TVET, and an industry expert from Kanenus Garment.

Representatives from the Asella and Bishoftu Job Creation and Vocational Offices and commercial banks also participated, creating opportunities for working-premises support, follow-up and access to credit.

The initiative contributes to strengthening youth entrepreneurship, green businesses and sustainable employment opportunities in the textile, garment and fashion sectors.

The CoBE acnowledges and gives recognition to Edukans Foundation Ethiopia for this partnership.

College of Business and Economics Conducted Research and Community Engagement Validation Workshop September 28-29/2006

College of Business and Economics held an in-house workshop to review completed research and community engagement activities and evaluate new research and community engagement proposals.

The Dean of the College, Dr. Messele Kumilachew welcomed participants and outlined the workshop’s objectives and the College’s activities from the previous budget year. Next to welcoming speech, Dr. Gebi Hussen, Director of the Research and Publication Directorate, shared the University’s research and technology transfer guidelines and encouraged researchers to follow them and disseminate findings through publications and policy briefs. Research Ethical Review Panel Chair, Dr. Girum Dagne explained the evaluation procedures, including the use of blinded review to ensure fairness and select impactful research and community engagement proposals.

The presentations included seven completed research projects, two research progress reports, one completed community engagement project, and two community engagement progress reports.

Participants also reviewed new 11 research and nine community engagement proposals for the 2019 E.C. budget year. Proposal evaluations took place in three syndicates, where evaluators, stakeholders, staff, and postgraduate students discussed submissions with project teams.

Representatives from banks, research institutions, government offices, and community organizations attended. Their participation helped strengthen collaboration and identify priorities responsive to local development needs. The workshop provided a valuable forum to assess achievements, offer constructive feedback, improve proposal quality, and strengthen partnerships.

The College reaffirmed its commitment to quality research, meaningful community engagement, technology transfer, and the practical application of research for societal and economic development.

CADU-ARDU Family and Friends Association Holds Annual General Meeting in collaboration with Arsi University at Haile Grand Hotel

​The CADU-ARDU Family and Friends Association held its Annual General Meeting at the Haile Grand Hotel in Addis Ababa. The event brought together founding members, former staff of the historic Chilalo Agricultural Development Unit (CADU) and Arsi Rural Development Unit (ARDU), alongside the Arsi University team, led by Dr. Hailu Fikadu, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer.
​Opening the event, Ambassador Shiferaw Jarso, Chairperson of the Association, expressed warm appreciation to the families and friends whose efforts brought the association into being. He commended the organizing committee members for their tireless work in planning the gathering and thanked Arsi University management for their ongoing commitment to collaborate with the association on the grounds where CADU-ARDU historically operated.
​During the session, members reviewed and deliberated on the association’s 2018 E.C. Annual Plan Ex*****on Report and accompanying Audit Report. Following comprehensive discussion, the assembly officially endorsed both documents and unanimously approved the upcoming 2019 E.C. Annual Plan.
​Representing Arsi University, Dr. Regasa Ayana, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, presented a report detailing the strong historical and institutional relationship between CADU-ARDU and Arsi University.
​Dr. Regasa emphasized CADU-ARDU’s pioneer role in introducing modernized and mechanized agriculture to Ethiopia, particularly across the Arsi Zone. He affirmed that Arsi University remains dedicated to preserving CADU-ARDU’s legacy by adding value to its historical achievements and furthering agricultural research and education in the region.

Arsi University, in collaboration with the non-governmental organization Imagine One Day, has successfully completed a four-day "Leaders in Teaching Ethiopia" capacity-building training program tailored for secondary school teachers.
​The joint initiative brought together more than 274 secondary school teachers representing 16 selected secondary schools across the Arsi and West Arsi Zones.
Hosted primarily by Arsi University’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities, the program aimed to equip teachers with essential pedagogical and leadership skills to address declining national standards in secondary education.
​Speaking at the closing ceremony, Dr. Hailu Fikadu, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer at Arsi University, praised Imagine One Day for its commitment to joint educational interventions. He emphasized that strengthening teacher capacity is vital to improving student pass rates on the Grade 12 national university entrance examinations. ​Addressing the broader national impact of educational quality, Dr. Hailu issued a stark warning about the long-term consequences of systemic academic decline.
​"When the quality of education suffers, the consequences ripple across every sector. We end up with physicians unable to adequately treat patients, engineers constructing poor-quality infrastructure, and teachers graduating without mastering the very subjects they are meant to teach," stated Dr. Hailu.
​He stressed that reversing this trend requires all stakeholders: academic institutions, non-profit organizations, and local authorities to work hand in hand to safeguard the learning outcomes of upcoming generations.
​Participating teachers expressed sincere appreciation to both host organizations. Trainees commended Arsi University and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities for their warm hospitality and logistics, while thanking Imagine One Day for creating impactful professional development opportunities.

Arsi University Holds General Discussion with Academic Staff on 2019 E.C Academic Year Activities

Arsi University conducted a general discussion with its academic staff on the academic activities and related issues planned for the 2019 E.C academic year. The meeting was attended by senior university officials, including Dr. Fikadu Mitiku, President of Arsi University, Dr. Mustefa Bati, Academic Vice President, academic directors, college deans, and all academic staff.
The discussion began with warm welcoming and inspirational remarks by Dr. Fikadu Mitiku, president of Arsi University, who highlighted the successes achieved by the university by the end of the 2018 E.C academic year in key areas including teaching-learning, research, community engagement, industry linkage, internationalization, and governance. Noting the important contributions of staff, Dr. Fikadu further stated that since the university is entering the first quarter of the 2019 E.C annual plan, all participants must actively participate to ensure successful implementation of the plan in every aspect.
Following this, Dr. Mustefa Bati, Academic Vice President, responded to staff concerns regarding facilities and academic readiness. He indicated that university management prioritizes academic-related problems and has taken actions during the summer, particularly concerning classrooms, teaching and learning materials, ICT facilities, and other essential requirements. Dr. Mustefa also emphasized the university’s commitment to becoming a university of applied sciences, noting that the institution has already approved the differentiation roadmap document and related guidelines.
Participants expressed appreciation to the university’s top management for its participatory and transparent leadership style. They also recognized the many reforms undertaken by the management, which are expected to help advance the university’s 2030 vision. In addition, academic staff affirmed their commitment to follow the directions provided and to act accordingly in order to achieve the planned targets of the 2019 E.C academic year.
