The Fagus Factory, completed in 1911 in Alfeld, Germany, stands as Walter Gropius’s first major architectural achievement and a pivotal work in modern architecture. Collaborating with Adolf Meyer, Gropius introduced innovative features like expansive glazing, transparent corners, and concrete columns, breaking from traditional industrial designs. Rooted in his vision of worker well-being, the factory prioritized light, ventilation, and functional aesthetics. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it represents the genesis of Modernist principles and the foundation of Gropius’s enduring influence on design.

One of the world’s most iconic examples of Brutalist architecture is the Washington, DC Metro system, designed by American architect Harry Weese in the 1960s. The coffered, barrel-vaulted stations reflect the grandeur of the neoclassical Federal architecture found above ground, while the raw concrete and sweeping geometric forms create a futuristic, modernist aesthetic underground. Weese’s design has become a landmark of Brutalist and public transit architecture.
