Poliittinen kielikahvila jatkuu huhtikuussa, nyt Pasilassa! ☕️🗣️

Politiikka ei kuulu vain niille, jotka osaavat väitellä tai puhua täydellistä suomea. Siksi Helsinki Left jatkaa Poliittista kielikahvilaa, kuukausittaista tapaamista, jossa harjoittelemme yhdessä suomea, puhumme ajankohtaisista aiheista ja tutustumme toisiimme.

Edellisen kerran aloitimme tämän yhdessä. Tällä kertaa kokoonnumme Pasilassa, Outrun Cafe.
Sinun ei tarvitse osata suomea sujuvasti. Kaiken tasoiset puhujat ovat tervetulleita. Tärkeintä on halu osallistua, kuunnella ja keskustella.

Political Language Cafe continues in April, now in Pasila! ☕️🗣️

Politics should not belong only to those who feel confident debating or speaking perfect Finnish. That is why Helsinki Left continues the Political Language Cafe, a monthly gathering where we practice Finnish, talk about topical issues, and build community across different language levels.

This month, we gather in Pasila at Outrun Cafe.
You do not need fluent Finnish to join. All levels are welcome. What matters is the willingness to participate, listen, and speak.

Political Language Cafe

NO WAR ON IRAN!

The U.S. and Israel are bombing Iran. Trump promises weeks more. Pentagon sources speak of months. Democratic senators warn of a ground invasion.

This is a total war against the people of Iran. Israel and the United States cannot sustain a war of attrition, so they make ordinary life unlivable and unbearable as a matter of military doctrine. Sanctions and strikes have choked off medicine, water, and other life-sustaining essentials. As predicted by dissidents jailed at Evin prison, any hope of reform or revolution has decisively collapsed under the weight of American bombs.

In Europe, our governments are backing this illegal war. Morally, materially, militarily. They continue to support Netanyahu, a fugitive indicted for crimes against humanity by our own courts.

For Finland, this policy is a direct threat to our national security. The shockwaves will damage our energy independence, food supply, prices of essentials, and our once proud standing in the world. The financial strain will be used to justify yet more and deeper cuts to the fabric of Finnish society that generations of Finns sacrificed to stitch together.

We are asked to bear all these costs for Israel. And for what? For the delusional belief that when Finland is in its hour of need, Donald Trump will be a man of his word.

Finland cannot escape its mounting crises until we decide to live in the real world, not right wing fairy tales. We can start by taking the example of Spain's Pedro Sánchez and Podemos, who have stood up for the interests of their own people over and above the interests of Israel.

So join us and our Iranian comrades as we say: no more!

Where: Kulttuuritila Merirasti (300m from Rastila metro station). Feel free to bring a refreshment with you from the nearby S-Market.

What to expect: 30 mins topic intro/background, 90 mins open discussion, then hang around for socializing.

Cost: Free, no registration needed.

This month's topic: what is the debt brake (velkajarru), how can we fight it, and what options remain for us if we fail?

Lauri Holappa is an economist at the Finnish Centre for New Economic Analysis (UTAK). His work challenges not just the social and ecological harms of mainstream economics but also exposes the incompetence of right wing economic management on its own terms.

He will join us to introduce details of the debt brake and practicing leftist economics in Finland today. Then we open a general discussion: how can we sharpen our understanding of the economy as it actually is and use that to build power for ourselves?

The party congress is held every 3 years and sets the course for the national party. This was our first congress since Helsinki Left was established. HL Chairperson Anna Paula Herrera and Eeva Mäkinen will share what decisions were made by the party, what they learned from the experience, and how we'll make immigrants' voices heard even louder next time.

Then we'll discuss the plans so far for 2026 and hear from you: what do you want to see from Helsinki Left in 2026?

This weekend, HELSINKI LEFT’s delegates participated in Vasemmistoliitto’s 2025 Party Congress, the highest decision-making body of the Left Alliance, held every three years.

Over three days, delegates:
• Elected the party’s Board for the 2026–2028 term
• Debated and voted on the new party programme
• Decided on dozens of initiatives and rule changes
• Listened to speeches from international sister parties
• Took part in discussions on equality, climate justice, workers’ rights, peace, and the future direction of the Left Alliance

The Congress approved a visionary programme that strengthens human rights, pushes back against discriminatory immigration policies, fights exploitation in the labour market, defends public services, and commits to building a fair and equal society for everyone.

Couch Convos #1: The Mamdani Effect

How did a movement in New York City mobilize 50,000 volunteers to knock on one million doors, and what could we learn from it here in Helsinki?

Helsinki Left is launching Couch Convos, a new monthly discussion series in English at Bar Typö (Tekstintalo, Lintulahdenkatu 3).

The first session will take place on Tuesday 4.11. from 18:00 to 20:00.
Participation is free, no registration is needed, and everyone is welcome.

Each event begins with a short introduction of 15 to 30 minutes from HL members or guests, followed by an open discussion with all participants. The atmosphere is informal and welcoming, and everyone is encouraged to join the conversation or just listen.

Our first topic looks at Zohran Mamdani’s campaign for mayor of New York City and the extraordinary organizing model built by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). What made it possible, and what lessons can we apply to the Finnish and European left?

The discussion will be introduced by Nitin Sawhney, Melissa Plath, and Matt Gardner, who will share insights from their experiences organizing in the United States.
